Welcome to the second of many opening lessons. For the weeks to follow we will be working with some of the Ruy Lopez variations. Ruy Lopez The Ruy Lopez starts 1.e4-e5 2.Nf3-Nc6. 3.Bb5 initiates the Ruy Lopez. It has been long been held that White's third move puts the most pressure on Black's position. There is the constant threat of White's capturing the c6-Knight and snipping the e5-pawn. Black's earliest defenses include: 3...d6 (Steinitz Defense) 3...Nge7 (Cozio Defense) 3...Nf6 (Berlin Defense) 3...Nd4 (Bird Defense) 3...Bc5 ( Classical Defense) 3...f5 (Schliemann Defense) This week we will be working on the Cozio Defense, which is 3.Nge7 Cozio Defense Black covers his c6-Knight but alos compromises hi f8-Bishop in aline called the Cozio Defense, which is a favored by few players today. 3...Nge7 4.0-0 d6 5.d4 Bd7 Black reveals his point. He hasn't been forced to trade his stron e5-pawn. 6.Re1 Ng6 Black continues to keep hi e5-pawn protected. In return howeover, White no gains a d5 outpost: 7.Nc3! Be7 8.Nd5 0-0 Black has a safe, if passive game. Information from Winning Chess Openings

I have decided on a few basic vote chess rules for Chess for LIfe.This rules will help us become one of the most successful vote chess groups on www.chess.com! Rule #1: Every person that joins a vote chess game,MUST wait till the time-left to cast votes hits 10 hours or less(we prefer 8hours though) Rule #2 Do not cast your votes until the group has decided on what move is best. Rule #3 All members that play must look at all replies on every move possible, and when you see a move you think is good tell us what it is and why you want to move it. Rule #4 Have fun! These rules are very basic. We expect dicpline from all players. We also want to get about a 80% vote on the move decided on.Following these rules will help us be the BEST vote chess group there is...

Robert James "Bobby" Fischer (March 9, 1943 – January 17, 2008) was the eleventh World Chess Champion. He is widely considered one of the greatest chess players of all time. Later in life Fischer renounced his US citizenship and became an Icelandic citizen. Fischer's achievements are legendary. At 13, he won a brilliancy that became known as the Game of the Century. Starting at age 14, he played in eight United States Championships, winning each by at least a point. At 15½, he became both the youngest Grandmaster and the youngest Candidate for the World Championship up until that time. He won the 1963-64 US championship 11-0, the only perfect score in the history of the tournament. In the early 1970s he became the most dominant player in modern history—winning the 1970 Interzonal by a record 3½-point margin and winning 20 consecutive games, including two unprecedented 6-0 sweeps in the Candidates Matches. According to research by Jeff Sonas, in 1971 Fischer had separated himself from the rest of the world by a larger margin of playing skill than any player since the 1870s.[1] He became the first official FIDE world number one rated chessplayer in July 1971, and his 54 total months at number one is the third longest of all-time. In 1972, he wrested the World Championship from Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union in a match held in Reykjavík, Iceland that was widely publicized as a Cold War battle. In 1975, Fischer did not defend his title when he could not come to agreement with the international chess federation FIDE over the conditions for the match. He became more reclusive and played no more competitive chess until 1992, when he won a rematch against Spassky. The competition was held in Yugoslavia, which was then under a strict United Nations embargo.[2][3][4] This led to a conflict with the US government, and he never returned to his native country. In his later years, Fischer lived in Hungary, Germany, the Philippines, and Japan. During this time he made increasingly anti-American and anti-Semitic statements, despite his Jewish ancestry. When his U.S. passport was revoked, he was detained by Japanese authorities for nine months in 2004 and 2005 under threat of extradition. After Iceland granted him citizenship, the Japanese authorities released him to that country, where he lived until his death in 2008.[5] Information from wikipedia

Steinitz Defense Making a sensible, Black reinforces his e5-pawn. 3...d6 Nowadays this move, called the Steinitz Defense, is considered too passive. Black locks in his f8-Bishop and gives white a free hand in the center: 4.d4! exd4 5.Nxd4 Bd7 The effects of the poening moves have favoured White. He has better control of the center and freer piece play. Many games games continue thus: 6.0-0 Nf6 7.Nc3 Be7 8.Re1 0-0 Practise has shown that White has the advantage.
