Precisely a week ago, the 2021 Bongcloud World Cup began with a full capacity of sixty-four players. The format of the event features eight eight-player double round robins, from which the winner of each section advances into the finals. Tournament regulations require each player to move their king forward once within the first seven moves without casting. After one week of play at a correspondence time control of two days per move, no substantial winner has emerged from any of the eight sections though clear leads have been defined. Group 1: The Coronavirus Leads on Tiebreak In group one, The Coronavirus [@CoronaVirus_OnTwitch] and Vish [@3Ke31-0] find themselves at 4.5 points, though the former is mathematically the higher performer with a major lead on tiebreak and one more unfinished game than the latter. In their first encounter, CoronaVirus_OnTwitch achieved what grandmasters would consider a "playable Bongcloud" even though all Bongclouds are playable. As compensation for the exposed king, White achieved a strong center with rapid development: Group 2: Two Cheaters Disqualified The second section of the event was sadly tainted with not one, but two players who decided to dishonor Lenny's opening by refusing to play it despite the insistence of the tournament director. As such the two violators have been disqualified from the tournament and the section has been shortened to ten rounds for group two; results against @MutaviBole and @vasilijj will not be considered for tournament standings. The first in line behind the two cheaters is @Superstargod at 5/6 with four games remaining. Behind him is @2Ke2_TH30RYz and Sepehr Golsefidy [@Sep-Gol] each at 4/4 with six games remaining. With fewer games remaining than the rest of the pack, Superstargod is under pressure to maintain their lead and to ensure this, they will need to defeat some of their contestants along the way. Superstargod's thirteen-move miniature demonstrates that the Bongcloud Defense and Botez Gambit are NOT a good mixture. Group 3: iofferyoutoresign Wins Lowkey Games Currently, in group three, @iofferyoutoresign leads with a perfect score of 6/6 but most of her wins were either premature resignations or opponents failing to move their king forwards within the first seven moves. In the following game, Black's King Lenny manifested bravery as all kings should but it apparently was too high on steroids. Group 4: Fate Lies on suryakantv Another section is tainted by the unlawful presence of two players who deny the teachings of the Bongcloud. @jasperseelemeijer and @Hector-2004 will be disqualified from the tournament but that can only happen if @suryakantv resigns his two games versus the two violators. I messaged him but his response implies that he is not aware of the definition of "resign" as it applies to chess... Behind the two red flags is @NobleElevator at 4/5 and five games remaining. His fourteen-move prearranged draw against @rebus2k was most certainly educational and entertaining. Group 5: KIDFIRE Disqualified Yet another section ruined by a cheater, this time though, it was not as severe as only one violator was involved (@KIDFIRE). @KIDFIRE has been disqualified and the section has been shortened to twelve rounds. The resulting leader is @royalknight101 at 7/7, followed by @UWillResignYesUWill at 6/6, and @2Kf21-0 with 5/5. Among the three, whoever wins out wins the section. In this game, royalknight101 beats my son @2Kd21-0 because the latter was not aware that castling is prohibited. Group 6: Too Early to Call In group six, only four out of fifty-six games have been played so it is too early to declare anything. However, of those four games, two players find their way at two points: Zachary Isaac Snow [@LightningChess21] (unsurprisingly) and @1b61-O. Because the former defeated the latter in one encounter, LightningChess21 has two tiebreak points versus the latter's zero. Group 7: Nail-Biting Race For First Place! On paper, @FamilyAshiap leads the section with 7.5/8, a half-point ahead of @maykallyon but can it even be called a lead, given that the latter has only played seven games? The two still have their two games against each other in progress and ultimately whoever prevails in those two will likely prevail in the group. Anything can happen. In the following game, FamilyAshiap rebuffs third-place finisher, @Salah-11's unsound attack, thus knocking out the latter from contention. Group 8: Roger436 in Good Form Group eight is also too early to call with the current leader having only two points, but Roger V. Shi [@Roger436] has demonstrated very solid play, currently at a score of 2/2, both of his games coming from Devesh [@son_of_the_bongcloud]. He currently has a decisive advantage in a game with his nearest competitor, Advaith Vijayakumar [@2Ke21-0], the renowned Bongcloudmaster. Can he keep us his consistency throughout the tournament? Only time will tell. Homepage Pairings Games
