I know that there are quite a few of you wish to participate in some actual, rated tournaments! Playing in tournaments is not only fun and rewarding, but also crucial in helping you develop into a better chess player. It seems a little intimidating and you may be confused about where you should start, but it's really not that hard! I'll do my best to help guide you through the process
In this forum, I will go over the basics of how to register for local tournaments.
1. You'll have to officially register as a member of uschess.org. Prices range from $17-50 per year, and you need to renew annually to stay an active member. You have to be a member in order to play in official, rated tournaments.
Here is the link to the registration site: https://secure2.uschess.org/webstore/member.php
and if you want to check out uschess.org 's homepage: https://new.uschess.org/home/
2. There are no tournaments in Davis that I know of, so local ones are generally in Sacramento or the Bay Area. You'll have to actively look for available tournaments and register. For the majority of them, you'll be signing up as an individual participant, but sometimes there are scholastic tournaments (for kids and juniors) which include school teams and groups (I'm hoping to bring our chess club to a tournament so we can play as a team!).
If you're interested in scouting some tourneys in the Bay area, check out this site: https://www.bayareachess.com/index/
If you'd prefer to participate in tournaments closer to home, here is the link to the Sacramento Chess Club's schedule of events page: http://sacramentochessclub.org/scc_schedule.htm
