I was watching this video last night
The point that Simon keeps making in this video is lower rated players do not adapt their plans to what their opponents are trying to do. While watching I was thinking "this is because the other guy does not know what you are trying to do here". Master level players have already seen all the attacking ideas before so it becomes just a habit to instantly recognize them.
For lower rated players it is much more difficult, especially under time pressure, but even in the slow games it is sometimes difficult to know what your opponent is planning.
There is a Dvoretsky book called "Recognising your opponent's resources" which I have read a little bit of. It is a good book but is mainly aimed for 2000+ rated players.
For lower rated players, what are the best ways to get better at recognizing your opponent's ideas?
What are the most common ideas that beginner and intermediate players need to be watching out for?
