Okay, so, as it turns out, I can do an anniversary every day.
Aerolift Flight 1015 :
This was an unscheduled transfer flight between Entebbe Airport in Uganda, with a stopover at Luxor Airport in Egypt, and ending up at Mykolaiv Airport in Ukraine. Operated by Aerolift, this Antonov An-12B contained five crew members. On the way, the fuel gauge showed a significantly lower fuel level than would have been expected. During the stopover in Luxor, the plane had a kerosene shortage.
During the inspection of the aircraft, a fuel leak was found and that fuel had therefore become scarce during the flight. A mechanic advised the pilots not to continue flying the machine and recommended that they leave the Antonov on the ground for the time being until repairs were carried out. The captain refused and requested that the machine be refueled.
After refueling, the Antonov lined up for a take-off for the onward flight. The pilots received clearance to take off from runway 20. The machine accelerated and took off. An eyewitness reported that the plane climbed conspicuously slowly after takeoff. One engine caught fire, and the fire quickly spread to other parts of the aircraft. About 700 meters behind the runway, the Antonov crashed next to a military base. The machine caught fire and was destroyed. All five crew members were killed.
Rest in peace. Despite the small number of fatalities, we shall never forget!
