Hi all. From now on every day I will do a memorial for a fatal crash in memory of the victims. Only some will be anniversaries because it's too hard to find one everyday. Today's memorial is to Singapore Airlines Flight 006, 31 October 2000. Singapore Airlines Flight 006 was an international scheduled passenger flight from Singapore Changi Airport to Los Angeles International Airport via Chiang Kai-shek International Airport (now known as Taoyuan International Airport) near Taipei, Taiwan. On 31 October 2000, at 23:18 Taipei local time (14:18 UTC), the Boeing 747-412 operating the flight attempted to take off from the wrong runway at Chiang Kai-shek International Airport during a typhoon. The aircraft crashed into construction equipment on the runway, killing 83 of the 179 people aboard. Ninety-eight occupants initially survived the accident, but two passengers died later from injuries in the hospital. This was the first fatal crash involving a Boeing 747-400, and also the first fatal accident in the history of Singapore Airlines. Rest in peace guys, rest in peace

For me, I have a couple. For commercial traffic, the stretch of beach (Dockwieler beach, etc.) just outside LAX has all the departure. Since it’s literally at the end of the runway everything’s flying super low. For military traffic, definitely Nellis Air Force Base. There’s a lot of regular activity from AWACs, transports, fighters, helicopters, and even bombers. Also the Thunderbirds practice there and if you go during Red Flag you’ll see a lot of foreign militaries as well.

I think mine has got to be the B-2. I was lucky enough to catch it circling quite near my house.

Okay, so, as it turns out, I can do an anniversary every day. Aerolift Flight 1015 : This was an unscheduled transfer flight between Entebbe Airport in Uganda, with a stopover at Luxor Airport in Egypt, and ending up at Mykolaiv Airport in Ukraine. Operated by Aerolift, this Antonov An-12B contained five crew members. On the way, the fuel gauge showed a significantly lower fuel level than would have been expected. During the stopover in Luxor, the plane had a kerosene shortage.  During the inspection of the aircraft, a fuel leak was found and that fuel had therefore become scarce during the flight. A mechanic advised the pilots not to continue flying the machine and recommended that they leave the Antonov on the ground for the time being until repairs were carried out. The captain refused and requested that the machine be refueled. After refueling, the Antonov lined up for a take-off for the onward flight. The pilots received clearance to take off from runway 20. The machine accelerated and took off. An eyewitness reported that the plane climbed conspicuously slowly after takeoff. One engine caught fire, and the fire quickly spread to other parts of the aircraft. About 700 meters behind the runway, the Antonov crashed next to a military base. The machine caught fire and was destroyed. All five crew members were killed.  Rest in peace. Despite the small number of fatalities, we shall never forget!

Recommended:  Book - Operation Bowler by Jonathon Glancey 21st March 1945. 1530 hours. Bursting through a hazy sky, dozens of Allied fighters and bombers sweep down over German-occupied Venice. Their mission – destroy Germany’s strategic outposts nestled along the port, while leaving the floating city unscathed. Movie - Devotion Devotion is a biographical war film that tells the story of the friendship and camaraderie between naval officers Jesse L. Brown and Tom Hudner during the Korean War. The film is based on the true story of the U.S. Navy's first Black pilot, Jesse Brown, and his wingman, Tom Hudner.  Game - Geofs (Geo Flight Simulator) This web-based flight simulator is the perfect choice for those who don't want to spend money on top-notch games such as MSFS and just want a free alternative. All you need to play this game is a device and internet. Pick from base planes, and many more community-made aircraft. Fly with different airlines, in different airports, in different planes, while doing it alongside your friends in a great web browser game. This is something that's really obvious, but you never actually thought about it before: "How come there are more planes in the sea than there are submarines in the sky?" Additional meme:
