1 or 2 player matches

I get that small teams would set up 1 or 2 player matches but what I don't get is why some of the biggest teams here on chess.com have them.

Can someone please give me an explanation?

Maybe the tiny mini matches are set up for people who don’t want to wait for days or weeks for a team match to start. They want to play now !

Some of them send out large numbers of rating-restricted challenges.  They don't actively recruit for those matches because a) they're just friendly matches, and b) there are too many of them.  But playing a huge number of these matches pushes them up the team match leaderboard.

That is what I thought but even 5 or 10 player matches can start in a couple of days if the team is big enough.

I've been away for a while, but here are some of the reasons I set up 1 player matches for even my largest groups:

  • some of the members of my larger groups liked them.
  • It seemed to be a morale booster for the player and the club to still remain victorious with our numbers advantage removed.
  • It helped to give members a sense of "counting" and "mattering: as the outcome of that one match and player has a more direct effect on the club's overall standing and points.

Those were my personal reasons (right wrong or indifferent) and I do intend to revive the practice.

Thank you for your input I didn't see it that way.

My club has >600 members but I have to limit matches to 1+ as I might not get the full quota if it were 15+

Then why not just leave the amount as 1+ instead of 1-2

Because most teams want to start as many of these matches as they can, as quick as they can. 1+ cannot be Autostart. If the match is 1-1 players or 2-2, then they can do autostart, and the match will obviously start faster.

At my club, i have started to do 1-5 matches, with Autostart on but with the start date 24 hours in advance. That way, if our opponents don't hit 5 players, it will still autostart.

Personally i think any club match should start with at least 3 players. Club matches are team efforts and not individuals. To speed up results, make it one day a move with "NO VACATION" rule invoked.

You can't have no vacation TMs.

You meant club matches as i have created my own tournament matches with no vacation allowed. If that is a restriction, maybe it should be changed, but 1 day a move does spped up play significantly.

TM=Team Matches. This whole thread is about TMs, not tournaments.

I understand. But i call them Club Matches as the site listed them. Might be better if site allowed No vacation rule to be available, after all both sides would have to agree to it anyhow to play.

Agreed.

Team matches are team vs team. Tournaments are x amount of players playing against each other.

You can't have no vacation team matches. That's the site rules. 1 vs 1 as a team match you might as well have random games.

1v1 as a random game and you might aswell have a 1v1 team match.

I could understand if it was a small team but not when you have 5000+ members
