CC20: cup R1: Team Cheshire vs Team Gloucestershire
Cheshire win

Please start. R2 cup Channel Islands v Cheshire

matt1979

Cheshire have been paired against the Channel Islands in the cup. There is already a league match set up for April. If both Cheshire and the channel islands agree I am happy for it to count for both competitions.

I think this makes a lot of sense rather than the two teams playing each other twice in the same month.  I will be adjusting the rules unless anyone objects  to state...

If two teams have a league match set up that has not started and if they are paired in a cup match, one match can be used for both if both teams agree.

I wouldn't have strong objections to this Matt but I never liked double headers at the end of the season in local football leagues and would probably try to avoid it on behalf of Somerset Wyvern. If you had two separate matches for registration the likelihood is the teams would differ slightly, especially if the number of players was larger, so few folk would end playing the same opponent.

I can understand, however, the desire to extend our competition stlll further and that this might be a preferable option for some newer, smaller clubs.

Thanks again for all your tremendous efforts in organising this great competition.

Cheers Alan

I don't really mind in terms of how other clubs choose to do things either.  I wouldn't like it for our club though, to be honest.  Funnily enough we had exactly this situation only a few months ago where I did note we were playing the same opponent twice, but didn't mind.  Actually this is against matt1979's team.  And to show the value of separate matches, look how close these are, and currently potentially going to go opposite ways to each other:

Cup match:

League match:

Potentially having the double-whammy of being knocked out of the cup and losing in the league all from the same match is a lot riding on one match!

As I say though, I'm not too fussed either way for how other teams want to work it, I'm just glad that this didn't happen in our case against Norfolk Knights.  Norfolk are doing incredibly well in that league game given they are out-rated on all except 2 boards and had their bottom board, who was one of those 2, timeout both games.

Thank you for your valuable contributions.  I am thinking of just making it an option if and only if the admins of both teams agree, then they must make that decision before the match begins and only when the matches happen to occur in the same month.   In the case of Cheshire and The Channel Islands they are both division 3 teams with a limited number of players and it might suit them both.  So far the Channel Islands are in favour and Cheshire have yet to decide.

The Lancashire- Norfolk matches are very interesting.  The Norfolk players have really put in a great effort. I think having 2 separate matches suited us.   It is still very close in the league match, it could go either way.
All the best

Matt

Sometimes these things can be decisive. In 2017 Team England won the European League by beating Russia in the EL fixtures but losing in the World League match that year. Disappointingly the EL obliges teams to play a double header if either team want to do that and Russia have not risked the separate matches since!

Have Cheshire and Channel Islands come to decision regarding the cup match as yet?

Congratulations to Somerset on their round 2 win. I assume Yorks are OK to start the next round against them?

matt1979

Channel Islands have said yes, I have asked Cheshire again.  If the match starts without a response from Cheshire then a new match will have to be created for the cup.

blackfirestorm

So far 1 person said yes but nobody else so I’m assuming it’s ok to do that.

matt1979

Agreed Cheshire v Channel Islands will count for both competitions

I think that Sussex can claim a narrow victory over Dorset on the countback rule: https://www.chess.com/club/matches/1096639/games

Please start round 3 match Sussex v Cheshire.

Cheshire can no longer be beaten in their match vs Channel Island, if drawn they win of board elimination.

Tricky_Dicky

Just agreed a draw in my game in the Somerset match which gives Somerset the half point to cross the line. Congratulations on your semi-final spot.

Thanks Dicky for the congratulations not the draw !!

I think Heref.-Worcs.-Salop. can claim victory over Birmingham on the countback rule: https://www.chess.com/club/matches/herefordshire-worcestershire-shropshire/1104080

Which sets up a match for them against Lancashire in Round 3.
