2020 Cup

Thanks to Lancashire for a tremendous battle in our Semi Final. Somerset Wyvern have just crossed the line to earn a place in the final. Am I allowed to say I hope our opponents are Sussex so that a reasonable number of our members can get a game ? I raelly think a County Cup Final should be over more boards than 4 !!!!!!!!!

The rules for the cup have been set in order that all teams have the opportunity to compete. Without doubt the advantage will generally be with the larger teams but we should appreciate that all member teams have the opportunity to overcome, what seems on paper, a stronger team.

Sorry Paul. I happen to feel very strongly that our brilliantly run county competitions would benefit from having larger numbers of members playing. It's good to have lots of teams involved but if a club is truly representing a whole county surely it should be able to field a team with 15 or 20 players.

Of course, playing strength (ie measured by players grades) is likely to be lowered if a team puts out a large number of players. Finding four very strong players probably isn't too difficult, whereas a team that can regularly field 20+ players really is representing a whole county.

when ive been involved in OTB county matches its 16 players per team but sadly a lot of our players either dont seem to be interested in online chess or prefer live games, which is understandable but its also a shame. I take the compliment though if your regarding me as a very strong player.

Under the 2020 rules there is no 4 month limit but as progress in the Cambs - Sussex semi final has been very slow it started nearly 5 months ago, the match will judged on position on the 5th July 2021. If the match is drawn Cambs will go through on board elimination.

It appears cambridgeshire player iceberge is on vacation so a bit unfair for Cambs to win if no resumption by 5th Jul, not sure how long vacation has been on this last game and who has taken the longest time to play, looking at my players other games for Sussex it appears they are all played in reasonable time although there is one other that appears a bit slow going but not sure that it is our player. its a bit of a quandary as I dont agree with players not being able to have vaction at all but also abusing/taking advantage of vacation is sometimes worse! Also as an aside it was very dissapointing for Cambs to only have 4 players to take part

There was the reverse situation late last week when @Juiceboy007 went on vacation. I think that both players, as premium members, are using the auto vacation in order to not time out. Just not playing the moves in a timely manner.

Well we all have our own situations and busy lives, im only using my vacation when i need to as im sure my opponent is as well. We normally have more than 4 boards but dont have a big pool to pick from.

fair enough, I accept the decision, can I request another consideration/discussion of increaseing the minimum number of players for 2022 cup, I know there is a thread about raising the number in the forum for 2021. also anyone have a link to the 2020 cup rules as I cant find the info only for 2021 and previous years but not 2020. cheers HCN

Hi,
Thank you for accepting the decision. The good news in terms of having a final consisting of a lot of players is this is looking extremely likely for the 2021 final. The teams left regularly put out 20 plus players. However, it is good to give the smaller teams a chance of success, once we put a higher limit on the number of players then this will deter the small teams from entering. We looked at changing the number of players per round but this will likely end up with a team progressing and then defaulting in the next round. The larger teams will usually have the advantage and they will always dominate in the league.
The rules for 2020 can be found here…https://www.chess.com/clubs/forum/view/rules-for-2020-season. As said previously there wasn’t a 4 month limit set for 2020 but we had to call a date on the match or risk it going on for months to come.
It's a Cambs player. I will remove him.
