@Cheezman75 Wow, you've been here since 2013, that's very impressive!
2026 Improvement Goals!
My plan for following year is:
- to play 50 long OTB games and analyze them
- work every day 15 mins on Lichess puzzles
- finish Yusupov Build up your chess series 4 books of first level : currently I've finished 2/3 of first one
- learn to play endgames well
Increase my rating in regular to at least 800 - not sure if I can, but I'd really like.
BTW, would playing the rapid games (likr 3-2) help me improve ? I try to do daily puzzle and a lesson daily, and if possible a few more puzzles, and alternate betwween bor match and regular (15-15) matches. Any tip welcome. Happy new year from France!
Hello everyone,
I have a few goals this year:
1. My main goal is to increase my rapid rating to 1000 (I’m currently 590)
2. I want to consistently get to 25+ on puzzle rush survival.
3. I would like to start playing non-rated OTB games. There is a local chess club near me that I would like to check out.
I think one of my biggest issues right now is my board vision. Like most 590-rated players, I hang pieces frequently. I need to learn to focus on what my opponent is trying to do, instead of only focusing on myself.
I have been watching (and enjoying) GM Hambleton’s Building Habits v2 series, as well as working through the Chess.com lesson library. I’m also reading the study plans by NM Mattson and NM Ramirez.
My primary goal is to maintain my strength and involvement with chess throughout the year; the other subgoals and ideas will hopefully support and encourage that.
In terms of puzzles, I would like to keep doing Puzzle Rush on Survival every day, with the idea to eventually break my previous record of 49. To aid that, I could start vocalizing aloud my thought process or even record some sessions with OBS for personal follow up. At a minimum, I'll be downloading the PGN's of the puzzles I got wrong for review material. And if I have the energy for the day, I can add another five puzzles from the Rated Puzzles.
I would like to acclimate back into playing (Rapid) games. I think breaking into 1000 could be reasonable but not the most essential thing to be concerned about. Perhaps a longer time control would help me dip back into the waters. Also, I feel that making some live, narrated recordings here could be more insightful on what I'm dwelling on each game to better resolve my pace of play problems.
And I'm slowly figuring out a group of openings that I'd like to try from some videos. Currently, I'm using Daily Chess to get used to the openings and to get back my "game sense" before pivoting to Rapid. I would welcome any suggestions on resources to learn some of the more thematic ideas/plans behind the openings.
i want to gain confidence. i don’t play online much which is why my rating is so low, and when i do, low rated players are so unpredictable it’s scary. im hoping to get to 900 at least but ill take higher if given the chance.

Here is a tip that helps me in games. Every time you get nervous, tell yourself that if you are so scared, you would have resigned by now or you would have tried to abandon the game at the start. But you didn't, which means you have faith in yourself that you can win. Also try unrated games. It gives you a good chance to practice against real humans but it takes the pressure off. It is better than playing against bots because after a while, you learn how they play and you need to learn to face unpredictability. Hope it helps.![]()
I want to get from 2200 elo to 2300 elo in Rapid.
