Forum

Hey Improvers! I’m NM Dane Mattson, Coach Dane. This forum is dedicated to chess improvement questions you have, either about general improvement or about specific questions you have about positions or games. I’ll be monitoring this forum along with NM Jeremy Kane and others, and we’ll do our best to help out! We also highly encourage the community to share their perspectives and thoughts - I’m sure in many cases, the community will have even better insight than we do

The "Accomplishments and Celebrations" forum is a great way to celebrate and share your own chess achievements / progress. Are there other members of the Improvers Club that have supported your chess journey that you'd like to recognize / give a personal shoutout? Perhaps you have found someone else's journey particularly inspiring and would like to recognize them. This forum is intended to share our appreciation of other members/contributors in the Improvers Club.  I'll start by giving all of you who are reading this a warm shoutout! It's wonderful to see how supportive and encouraging this community is, and it's an honor supporting you along your chess journey.

Have an interesting problem - either from your own game or from elsewhere - that you want to share? Post it here and challenge the community! Be sure to state which side is to move, and we encourage you to post the game information if you have it and consider a note about which rating level the problem may be good for.

This forum hopes to share games where players have played brilliant moves that changed the course of the game or have overlooked a move that might have given them the better advantage. Brilliant moves are amazing to play and make players confident in there calculations. Most of the times it is that lower rated and some high rated players tend to sacrifice pieces which turnout to be blunders ! This forum hopes to tackle how players must think before sacrificing a piece for an advantage or even a WIN !!

Hi everyone! I wrote a blog this week about how I track my results in a spreadsheet and shared a template if you want to try it in your own games. I'm curious if any of you track your results, and if so, what kind of data to you track? https://www.chess.com/blog/SamCopeland/the-spreadsheet-i-used-to-get-to-2500
Thread by: @Grucky0 It seems to me as though it doesnt really apply to actual games where your approach to playing moves is different. Theres not a clear tactic in every position. If it is worth it, how much should we do it and what is the best way to learn from puzzles? We can do normal puzzles, puzzle rush, etc.. and there different ways to practice puzzles. But which one is the best practically for playing games?

Thread by: @hhart10k Training schedule: How have you organized your training schedule? What have you learned that works for you and what doesn't work for you? Goal setting and weekly progress: How do you identify your goals and check your progress towards them on a weekly basis? Let's discuss and if you are stuck on something related to the above, ask for help so that we can elaborate and improve together.

Sometimes we need to laugh so we don't cry. This is a great place to post a silly blunder or something funny that happened in one of your games. Please be supportive! Here's one from a game of mine against a GM. I just played a bad move and my GM opponent resigned. Can you spot what we both missed about the position?

Do you have a favorite chess book or course that you've learned a lot from? Let us know here! I'll get us started with my favorite chess book, the Seven Deadly Chess Sins by GM Jonathan Rowson, which is a fascinating look at decision-making, mostly relevant for classical chess. My favorite endgame book is Concise Chess Endings by GM Neil McDonald, which should be helpful for most levels and time controls. For something positional, check out GM Johan Hellsten's, Every Pawn Structure Explained.  There are tons of other great books and courses out there. What do you recommend?
