Maybe Seirawan chess??
A Custom Variant Question
Turn on Setup Chess and then Setup Complete. You can add as many pieces as you want for each player using the PGN4. (It should be fairly obvious to spot, but feel free to ask if you can’t figure it out.)
Note: Rubicon uses this mechanic.

This works, but I want the pieces to be able to go anywhere on the board, like Crazyhouse.

Never mind
I'm creating a variant where I want there to be pieces that are not on the board, but ready for deployment at any time. The Setup Chess rule will only let players deploy the pieces at the beginning of the game. Crazyhouse works, but it adds an unwanted rule. Is there a particular rule or ruleset that works for this?
