Only on chess.com right?

I'd think that you could use the copyright to make money XD!

Green_Sleeves

I don’t know if this is a copyrightable concept haha but I was offering it to chess.com to utilize on their variants server. If they’re interested (which they don’t seem to be, except Max, CheesePhoenix, and GS).

lukegk

I don't think you can copyright this lol

lukegk

actually ig you could

btw CGAs do attribute the designers of a variant (at least privately), I don't think a situation would ever occur where someone would need to claim "ownership" or "copyright" on a variant anyway

This will take a long time to code sad.png sad.png

lukegk

I don't actually think it would be that hard for the programmers to do.

PeetTheSockMan

you should put this on the custom variants server... it seems to go a lot faster over there in terms of getting things tested and introduced

First you have to code a standard chess (EZ for programmer)

Then you code the swap-real-king function. Normal!

A little more complicated, you have to add a program that lets you choose a piece in the beginning, and that piece cannot go into check, unlike a normal king.

Green_Sleeves

Well, this is capture the royal, so there wouldn't be "check" per se. It would just need to end the game if the piece is captured.

lukegk

Yeah

Yes, sorry, thats what I meant, I updated the comment. What I meant is that if you just made the normal king rules apply to the ahab king, then they can go into check, when it should be that they can't.

ProfBlundermaster

This is a very original idea. I like it.

This is a pretty goofy idea for a variant, but I think it would create some really interesting gameplay and add an extra challenge.

The name "Ahab Chess" comes from a wicked king of Israel in the Bible (named Ahab, of course). In 1 Kings 22:29-38, it tells of an event when Ahab went to war with another country, and he disguised himself as a regular soldier. When the enemy army realized that the "king" up in the chariot was the king of Judah, not Israel, they were confused and didn't know what to do. However, Ahab was struck at random, and ended up dying.

Now that I've finished that little Bible history lesson, perhaps you see where this is going.

My idea is that the board would have a standard chess setup, and at the beginning of the game, each player selects any one of his pieces (even a pawn if he really wants to) to be his royal piece. The only piece that cannot be royal is the king (in the story, the enemy realized that the king was just a decoy). [EDIT: The Queen would be prevented from being royal as well, because of how difficult it would be to capture a royal queen. This suggestion came from @noahfavelo in the comments below.] Neither player would be able to know which piece has been selected as a royal. This would be a capture-the-royal variant, so you can knowingly put yourself in "check" pretending your piece isn't the royal, taking the risk of possibly losing, or just throwing your opponent off.

What do you think? Is this another dumb idea of mine? XD or would this be good?

This is similar to regicide cchess

Did you read the entire post? I’m assuming since you felt the need to quote all 5 paragraphs of it that you did…

I think your game is a great idea, as long as the bishop can be the king.
