I played your variant and it was really fun

The mystery aspect made it lots of fun

Cool! I’m glad.

What is the seven check rule? And that doesn't really apply since it is a capture the king variant, not a checkmate the king variant.

In rookmate, your job is to either checkmate the rook or check it 7 times

checkmate happens sometimes but more often than not it is decided by who can check faster

Rookmate was never referenced anywhere in the question lol, for this variant Capture the King rules apply as usual but with a non-king royal

I think rooks would also be hard to capture if they were the king

Rookmate would not work without the 7-check rule

Base on game 3 checks!

the problem is that you can't deliver checks if you don't know which piece the royal is

The checks can be invisible to the checker

Hey guys, I'm still working on developing this variant and solidifying the rules and getting test games. To that end, I've created a group dedicated to this variant!

https://www.chess.com/club/ahab-chess

Please join if you'd like to help me test Ahab Chess! I will automatically promote all CGAs and Variants Admins who join, unless they ask me not to.

I will join!

Hi , I'm interested in , too what happened for this trend and results because , as I'm a pro Stratego player Boardgame , I found it some similarities between them when adding hidden factors and elements like tag a piece as final king !

Please note that in all hidden or secretly deduction Boardgames , you will need a referee for check a fixed initial pieces or conditions for further judgments .

Today , I was searching a Board game like Stratego that has chess elements with 8 * 8 dimension , and combined rules guessing if exists , perhaps would named Chesstratego !

But finally Google nearly set with AI searching implemented , as recently they have mentioned ! , suggested this page of Chess.com several times , let's say at first I didn't believe is related issue , but then I said yes , that's somehow it !

My main suggested rules for my ( ! ) chesstratego were these instructions ;

1 - king will be as a Flag role but like mobile movable Flag ! with having no any permission to hit another pieces (but as it'd have in Chess !)

2 -the pieces with lower ranks (as chess pieces rank) have no permission (have not able ) to hit higher ranks , when attacking each others , as higher rank ones will eliminate them from the board

3 -the pieces with equal ranks level , both will be eliminated from the board after the one attacks another (like Stratego ! )

4 -ranks will be as the chess , from high to low ; Queen>rook>bishop>knight>pawn easy !

As I said like Stratego , you couldn't hit & eliminate any pieces by e.g. a pawn , unless another pawn (the same or lower law)

Anyway I doubt ahub-chess will be interesting too and wish come to the variants category of the site soon !

The reaction of opponents (Human or Bots) in defend or letting aside (bluff) or forgetting (LOL) will be exciting !!

Unfortunately, this trend kind of died when chess.com variants as a whole went inactive a few months ago. But I still play it occasionally over-the-board. We just put a small piece of tape on the bottom of the piece that we pick as Ahab, so that there's no refereeing necessary.

If you'd like to see the games that have been played so far and the development of all the rules and such, you can join the Ahab Chess club: https://www.chess.com/club/ahab-chess

The main rule-update that we've done is to add the bare-piece rule, meaning that if your only remaining piece is your Royal Ahab and all your other pieces have been taken, then you lose.

It's actually possible to get a royal queen, e.g. get a royal pawn and promote to queen

Definitely add n check or a rook/bishop would be impossible with low material.

Green_Sleeves

I figured that the bare piece rule would be a better route than n check.

thundertoad2379

probably

thundertoad2379

Never mind it's definitely better.
