Allow joining recently-started tournaments?

It would be nice if you could join a recently-started tournament.  There's not much point to letting you join with only 1-2 rounds to go, but if you've only missed the first 1-2 rounds, it would be nice to be able to join with zero points from the early rounds.  Your chances of catching the leaders would be low, but finishing 5/5 in a seven round tournament might still put you in the medals.

Swiss tournaments.

I know this is something that has been discussed before. I'm not at my work computer right now, but I'll pass this on.

(Personally, I think this is a good idea, although there are some subtleties involved — eg., if you have a tournament that starts with 4 members and thus becomes a 2-round tournament, and then 100 players join the tournament late; what should happen then?)

In that case, is there any reason the number of rounds couldn't be increased?  The number of rounds already has to be decreased in certain cases due to dropouts.

Personally, I'm not so fond of that since it makes the tournament take longer.

Eg., if I start a tournament and it says 2 rounds at the start, I might make some plans (say that my wife comes in while I'm playing in the first round and asks if I can do something in ten minutes, and I agree since I see that it's just a 2 rounder). Then 100 more people join — maybe because I'm playing and they want a chance to play someone of my calibre  — and suddenly it's an 11 round tournament!

Well, normally the live tournaments have 7 rounds, unless that's reduced by dropouts or limited sign-ups, right?  There's no reason for late joiners to increase it beyond the original maximum, I would think.

No, of course not — I was thinking of an epic 11-round tournament

I know a lot of members of the US Chess group have asked for it.

Also, allow late joins after the half-way point probably don't make a lot of sense, if it gets implemented but maybe it would still be fine. Also have to decide how to handle pairing since it isn't totally fair for high rated player to join late and play all the low rated players.

I think that makes sense
