Balancing Atomic: Possible Ideas

Hey all: I've recently become a frequent victim of 1. Nf3 2. e3, and that brought me to consider how one might consider balancing atomic. Below are some ideas I had (some of which are tested, others not) to hopefully make the two sides a little more equal.

  1. Torpedo Sideways Atomic - To be honest, this one was probably the main one that was tried out by my friend group: it's surprisingly fun and I don't believe white has an easy win (I couldn't port this variant to fairy stockfish sadly, so I don't know if an evaluation is even possible). The main idea for balancing is that with the ability to push pawns fast, black gets more counterplay as well as the possibility of a better defense.
  2. 960 Atomic - The main idea for balancing is the removal of (most) opening knowledge. However, it also comes down heavily to RNG.
  3. Simul 2 Games of Atomic; first to checkmate/timeout wins - The main idea for balancing is that it allows each player to be both white and black. Also, it allows for goofy stalling strategies, similar to that of bughouse. However, it's a bit janky with the current thing of chess.com variants: it's hard to start at the same time, and it can be hard to tell who won first.
    1. Speaking of which, if any variant's developers are here, adding a built-in simultaneous bughouse would be pretty fun: the current methods of using alternate accounts are really weird and could lead to rating manipulation.
  4. Possible to Implement: Ensure that for each game with the same player, they will always switch sides.
    1. This one is probably the most likely to be implemented: at least from what I hear, people get really mad if you win as white, and then accept the other player's request in the lobby to prevent playing black. It's probably better to just ensure that the sides ALWAYS alternate between games of two players. That or implement some sort of Perfect Sharing Algorithm just to make sure it's fair between two random players.

Also, unrelated: my parents wanted me to change my name to "eagle_bozo," since they disliked the previous one; sorry EagleOnHigh.

Oh, are you the previous short bozo?

I think it's a great idea to 960 atomic!

Interesting idea to "switch sides". I put something in my profile about this. I often like to rest after one game. Or analyze it. I know it makes some people incredibly mad. :-)

and we cant forget diplomatic atomic duck hill chess hehe

(that was actually how i met panda XD)

dont take my comment above seriously lol

it was just a variant i really enjoyed playing

but another idea for making atomic more balanced is u have to take a move to plant a bomb on a piece so that both sides have time to react to a move and also it makes the game harder to completely memorize

if a piece takes another piece and neither have a bomb then it just becomes a normal capture

if a piece with a bomb gets captured then it explodes the adjacent squares just like normal atomic

idk if this can be a solved game since i havent tried it tho

also it cant be done with chess.com last time i checked since theres no system for that
