This is my first post in this group. And i would like to impart to you my brothers the importance of endgame technique.

After escaping a tough opening, and grabbing a rook in the middlegame and simplyfying to preserve material advantage you ended up with the following position. You know you are winning but how do you do it?. Its a "Won" Game for white, but if you dont know how to checkmate in this endgame then it will only be a batlle of chess clock pressing and a chance for your opponent to draw (And a possible taunt from your oppo What do you Do?

Look at the position....the first step is to drive the king to the edge of the board. Rook and King must work together.Second,If possible try to set the "Dream" position you prefer in your head for example: White: Kb3, Rh2 Black: Kb1 with white to move.Or you can rotate it else were like White: Kc5 , Rb8 Black; Ka5 with white to move. It can be in any side of the board as long as such position is possible.Good luck to you guys.Wink

Nice baltic, i sure wish i had read this last night as i was in a similar position in a game. In my fear of a stalemate, it ended in a draw!! Thanks for the info!!

Very helpful Thank You.  This seems to be a pretty common endgame.

Scott-

The pieces just keep sliding back when I try to move them. Just kidding... sort of.

Hi again...to my section. Here i would like to share the importance of finding the most resourceful way "logical way" of saving a game.

For all of us amateurs mostly beginners we have the tendency to believe that when we have two or more minor pieces the game is won. Not neccesarily. Some endings are very hard to win  which includes minors pieces so each one of us must either study or stray from such possible outcomes(if time is of the essence in the game)...Our brothers Achillesfury and Kamakaze can well explain such things to you in the  most logical way. But here i would like to make an emphasis of thinking straigthforwardly on the actual outcome of the game.

For most of us amateurs we will believe that after white takes the h6 pawn the game is won for white.Well....yes if the hpawn of white gets through.... So with this in mind what do we do?

Being hero with pants before the underwear would be funny here. like trying to go for a mate by attacking whites king with knights coordinated with the king can proved to be fatal. This is were "Greed" need not be at ones mind. What do I mean?..It is clear that whites h6 pawn is dangerous..so "King hunting" would just worsen the position because each time you play your knights to the place for attack..the pawn moves square by square, therefore if i "dream" of taking it out by knight sacrifice..at least the game is drawn.(How else could two knights checkmate a lone king unless of course  black makes a huge error in play). Thus giving up a piece for a games' salvation is the only lolgical way of escaping a loss.

It doesent matter if the opponents got two knights against your lone one...at least he cant win the game and on the other hand you saved the game from a loss.

The Mighty Korchnoi knows such things as after 73.Nh6..., he went of the pawn immediately 73...Nc5

and the rest went 74.Nf5 Nd5 75.h6 Ne4+ 76.Kd3 Ng5 77.Kd4 Kc6 78.Nfg7 Ne7 79.Nf6 Ng6 80.Nf5 and soon black would be willing to sacrifice his knight for the pawn..The games was drawn.
