Bradley Fowler

Sorry to see him pass away.  There are about a dozen NC players that I have known since the early 1970s that are no longer with us (Chuck Howard, Frank Montakhab, Rex Demers, Ron Gray, Billy Watt).  Here is one of my games with Brad Fowler when he was experimenting with the Alekhine.  It was played at the Wake Forest Open in 1978, which I won.

I played 9 (!!) tournament games with him. Way more than with anyone else. I used to have a home in Austinville, Va & played in about 10 of the tournaments that him & Scott Brown directed in Hillsville, Va, basically the same town. He was an awesome guy & a lot of fun. He will be missed by a lot of people. I was hoping that him & Scott would be at the NC Open this year because I was going to try to make it & wanted to see them. They used to carpool & play the same tournaments. I'm going to call Scott & see if he'll come play. Rest in peace Bradley.

I remember thse Hillsville tournaments; I went to one or two.

I didn't know Mr Fowler but I'd like to extend my condolonces to his loved ones and friends.

I stayed in the room beside him and drank a few beers with his ever present buddy Scott and John Smithwick. I had no idea that would be his last but I'm glad I got to spend more time with him then, than any other tournament! R.I.P

I met Brad in Hillsville, VA in March of 2009 ... can hardly believe that Cavalier 54 tournament was 8 years ago !

In this one, Brad and I found ourselves locked up in a Dutch Indian, Leningrad game.
