Breach of privacy due to chat messages being publicly accessible

I've learnt that the archives of previous games and messages are now publicly accessible by anyone. This is a blatant breach of privacy and it should've been worked through with great care. I urge the developers to remove the archives of games before the latest major update. Chat messages are intended for just the 4 participating players and not for anyone else, that is at least how I believed the policies work. Please do something.

I have also notified the CHANGELOG group.

First of all, please note that if you want to say something in the club, you should post it once. You posted it to the club notes, to this new topic and also to 1 more topic. So, you said the same thing 3 times. Please respect other club members and moderators and they will respect you.

Secondly, we informed players (multiple times) that the chats are saved in the archive now.

Thirdly, team chats (teammates talks in Teams games) are hidden for privacy reasons and even chess.com admins cannot read them.

Fourthly, the games are not private. Spectators can watch live games and see the chats. (And this feature exists for months.) So why cannot they read chats in the archive?

If you wrote something really private (credit card number? some password?) in a chat and want it to be deleted, you can contact chess.com support team (you must include the game number and description of what and why should be deleted) and we will remove that particular message.

I can see how someone might think they were in a private setting when they were chatting. Example - down to 2 players and the chat box says there are 0 spectators, you could reasonably believe you were chatting in private. And now that conversation is public. You can apply that line of reasoning to any conversation in chat when there are 0 spectators - you "know" who is in the chat.

That said, I think it is a weird concern and chess.com should probably ignore it (other than the offer to remove sensitive info as you did).

By the way, before the Aug 7th update players couldn't see the number of spectators.

I agree with privacy... this is wrong!

Upvote for deleting all messages... you could have done a voting on this!

I like the idea of chat messages being public after the game, but it should be made clear that that is true.

How in Heaven's Name is this fella's username not banned like any vulgar obnoxious foul language username would be??? After notifying them they didn't have you change your massively insane username?? How CAN this be?

Avatar of MainframeSupertasker

Please do not discriminate a person's username. Chess.com will never ban him unless he violates the community guidelines or the terms of service.

Avatar of EyeKnows

what word/part of that do you consider "vulgar obnoxious foul language" PEPSI?

Avatar of ThePEPSIChallenge

The insane mad rebellious of Love I would say.

Would the word BARBARIC exist had that entity never been created??

HELL NO

Does his name discriminate against any class of people? I think the answer is no.

Avatar of ThePEPSIChallenge

His 'username' DISCRIMINATES every last shackled one he's deceived and placed them separate from their true being, THROUGHOUT mankind's history!!! THAT CLASS INDEED! The answer only to be 'no' would be because his deception, CLEARLY.

People hailed Hitler too and look at the devastation to millions he did. BECAUSE BEING POSSESSED BY such described..

Avatar of liquid-sun

To be fair, what about the "christians" in the inquisition that murdered so many innocent people? My point is that no part of satan worship involves a direct discrimination against any particular class. To compare satan worship to Hitler worship is to forget this important fact.

Don't start a holy war here, please. If you don't like someone's nickname you can report it to chess.com support team (not to 4 Player Chess support).

I’m just amazed it is a username and allowed, massively amazed, saddened, pissed, etc. etc. etc. etc.

And, To liquid-sun.. had that entity not existed their never would have been ONE Christian TO do such barbaric outlandish absurdities that’s so far from the LOVE of who’s NOT EVEN allowed to be discussed here or most of the site because of how heated things become  B E C A U S E  ‘that’ deceiving entity.

Any more on such discussion you’re welcomed to PM me.

Bab is right though. Religion is a very personal thing. Sorry if I said anything offensive PEPSI.

Avatar of ThePEPSIChallenge

it's quite alright, liquid

I'm not upset, found you offensive whatsoever, but I will address what should be and agree such discussions should be private. I'm not mad at the guy, rather confused why it's allowed, such a username, very disturbingly confusing. Is all I was addressing...

Avatar of Skeftomilos

I agree that religion is a personal thing, and I dislike when people make it a public thing by treating their username as a platform for blatant religious propaganda, as this guy did. So I just reported him to the admins. Usernames are intended to be used as a form of identification, and should be related to the bearer, not to irrelevant things or entities.

I am not holding my breath though. Last year I repeatedly reported a guy with username KillTheRich, in no avail (at another chess site).
