Application:  Chess.com - chess.ipa v.024

Type:  Bug

Functionality:  Chess Online

Description:  When you first go to the list of online games, it is displayed correctly. However if you select a game from the list and then go back to the game list, the iPhone system info bar at the top (battery, clock, signal strength etc) will overlap the screen and partially cover the "Home" and "New Game" buttons.

which OS are you running?

I'm seeing the same behaviour (here and on other screens accessed from a game screen - any screen with a chessboard display), and I'm on the latest release of 3.0.

1) Playing against the computer, I notice there's a little light bulb icon, which I thought was "hint"... apparently it just makes a move for you?  No opportunity to accept or reject it?  That's... unusual.

2) Playing against computer, I hit the '+' button, which takes me to some kind of menu asking if I would like a new game.  Odd that this is next to a different menu (the three dots/lines) that does the same, but the bug is that when I cancel out to come back to my game, it has switched players!  I was White, when I came back I was Black, repeatable.

3) This one's odd -- when I'm playing the computer, and "shake" the phone, I get the FEN string and move list.  Is that intentional?

4) Playing the computer, I reached a point where it was soundly beaten (just throwing away pieces to avoid mate), and it crashed to desktop.  When I came back in, it was much earlier in the game -- hadn't saved anything since I think the thing I did in #2.

5) In Tactics Trainer, I see that it now gives me my rating after a problem, but there's really no label or indication of what it is.  In fact, there's another number as well, and I have no idea what it is.

6) In Tactics Trainer, again, shaking the phone brings up some kind of status panel, with the Tactic ID and Correct Move list.  Some kind of debug left in by accident perhaps?

7) Online Chess: viewing a completed game and hitting the chat button brings up, "Error: Game Already Over."

8) Same thing for offering a draw in same completed game.

9) Playing against computer, I mated it, and not much happened -- just a Bd5# in the move list.  Intentional?

10) Playing against computer, I deliberately stalemated it, and nothing happened.  No indication that the game was over.

Same here.  I am still on OS 3.0 (not 3.0.1); same thing.

Wow..  following from Spiffe's post (#3 specifically), I tried shaking the iPhone in different places.  I found that you get another move-list in an online game as well as when playing the computer.

The stranger behaviour is in Tactics Trainer.  If you shake the iPhone in there (during a problem), you get the Problem ID and a list of correct moves.  It's weird that you get this list before you've even completed the problem, since it provides a handy way to cheat.

Stranger still, it has a funny way of turning the tables on you (literally, sort of) if you DO try to cheat.  Pull the shake-shake-during-problem trick once or twice and all of a sudden you're in the twilight zone, and YOU'RE playing the losing side in subsequent Tactics puzzles.  For instance, I just played through this puzzle - as Black:

Of course, that sort of thing is a no-win scenario, since the iPhone just plays the winning moves.  :)  Awesome bug.

shake is for debug. will be disabled in final version ;)

Excellent.  It's tempting to use it for...  *something*..  :)

11) Tactics Trainer -- no timer visible anywhere.  Presumably this still affects my score, but I have no idea how long I have to solve something.

12) Another odd one -- when I'm playing either Online Chess or against the computer, every so often (2-3 minutes?), the phone vibrates and makes the move noise, even though I haven't done anything.  No impact on the game in either case.

13) Tactics Trainer -- some weird behavior on one problem, Tactic 20601.  This appears to be a tactic for Black, but it gave me White to play.  Not surprisingly, the problem did not end properly -- at the end of the problem, it just sat there, no "success" or "failure".  EDIT: same thing happened with 33513.  For that one, I checked online, and it says I skipped it, FWIW.

14) Sometimes in Online Chess, it shows the move list; sometimes not.  Have not been able to identify a pattern yet.

15) This is more of usability feedback, but I gotta say, the buttons are not extremely intuitive in the various subsections (Tactics, Online, Computer).  Eventually you figure them out, but still... I'm an experienced (and, if I may say so, intelligent) chess.com user.  You post an iPhone app, you're going to have tens of thousands of people giving a try who aren't.  (I'm sure this is part of the plan. Smile)  How are they going to figure out what all this stuff means?  Have you thought about writing & adding a Help file or User's Guide or something?  I really think you're going to need it.

16) In "Play Computer", I changed the settings such that both players are computers.  It ripped off about 15 moves of theory in no time, but then when it started to think, it only made it through about 1 move for each side and then crashed the app.  I don't necessarily think this needs to be an option (Computer vs. Computer), but if not, then Human/Computer should be a toggle between the two colors.

17) Ok, so I tried to hit the Settings menu to get out of my situation from #16, and I accidentally hit the second menu (three dots & lines).  I cancelled out of that, but when I came back a) all was white except for the board, b) the game was at a further-along position than when I left (possibly at the end of the book opening line?), and c) the app crashed immediately thereafter.

18) Ok, I did manage to hit the first menu, and changed it to Human-Human, at which point it crashed to desktop.  Then I started back up (it was back in Computer-Computer mode), hit the menu again, and started a new Human-Computer game.  The game itself seemed to be working, but the entire non-board area was white again.  Took several restarts of the application to get that back to normal.

19) I resigned my first game through the app today.  That worked fine, but similar to the end of game in Computer play, nothing really happens -- it asks me if I am sure I would like to resign, and I said yes, and there was no feedback.  No indicator that "bogdanekifor won by resignation" or anything other than the move list.

20) In fact, I'm wondering now, if someone offered me a draw, would I know?

Enormous_Gastropod

Well, I'm not even seeing active games. When I open the app I only see a listing of "Finished Games" and none of my active games.

21) You were having some site maintenance a minute ago, and I took the opportunity to try the iPhone app.  Online chess doesn't crash, but all it does is bring up a completely white screen.  (The five buttons at the bottom are still available.)

onosson

I have been very busy and not following the bug threads thoroughly, so this may have been addressed already...

Currently, I have three active games on chess.com, one standard and two chess960 games.  In the games list in the iPhone app, the 960 games are not listed.

Ousland

Sometimes I have a white background in the computer mode. This bug uses to take place (not 100%) when you have all your online games on "opponent move" and you change from computer mode to online and again to computer (using the buttoms at the bottom)

Bug Description: selecting one of the list of Open Challenges on page PlayChessOnline->NewGame then going back to the list of Open Challenges by tapping NewGame or NoThanks causes subsequent selections to always bring up the page for the challenge that was first selected.

kwestlund

I just got a *** -[NSCFDictionary length]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x3abe60 Error popup after playing around with the selections on the page PlayChessOnline->NewGame.  I think I selected the second entry first, then I went back to select the first entry which then produced the error.

Comment: there seems to be no way other than restarting the app to cause the PlayChessOnline->NewGame page to refresh with the latest list of open challenges.
