Bug Reports for v 0.025

11) Playing vs. Computer in a 5 min game -- taking back a move resets both players' clocks.

12) Playing vs. Computer in a 5 min game -- after taking back that move and re-doing it with the right double-arrow, the computer made no move.  Clock eventually expired with no action.

In general, I would assess the status of the app as follows:

  • Tactics Trainer is solid -- a few more little tweaks I'd like to see, but it's in good shape overall.
  • Online Chess seems... OK.  I'm using it as my primary interface for remote play, so it's stable enough for that.  However, there are some important pieces of functionality that are lacking, and for which I have to go to the web site: seeing when draw offers are made or games end, rating adjustments, Game Explorer, tournament/match tables, etc.  I realize some of these may not make the first version, but until they're available, Online Chess will only ever be a partial-functionality mobile companion.  Maybe that's what you're shooting for.
  • Playing vs the Computer is pretty rough.  The engine has some big problems -- for instance, even on the highest strength, it failed to make any progress whatsoever in forcing mate in a KR v K ending.  (Its performance in KQ v K wasn't particularly impressive, either.)  There are a lot of ugly bugs; things that just don't work the way you would think.  And unfortunately, the Computer play is probably the basis on which most iPhone users will initially judge your app, because that's what they're used to.

I would think seriously about making some focused improvements here before you release the app.  While chess.com users will probably be pretty tolerant of the minor warts in the other sections, that's not really your audience -- this is for the world at-large who are looking for good chess apps on the iPhone.  A bad star rating is difficult to overcome with subsequent releases.

9) I am frequently getting a "No Active Internet Connection" when playing Online Chess.  I've seen this since the first version, but I've seen it in enough locations now that I am pretty sure the problem is with the app, and not with the actual connection.  I've seen it on both WiFi and strong 3G connections.

The behavior is this: I bring up a game where it is my move.  I wait maybe 5-10 minutes. (I like to think deeply.)  Then I finally select my move & confirm it.  Now I get the error.  My move has actually been transmitted to the server; I just can't pull down the refresh to the client, and no subsequent games will show anything either until I restart the app.  After restart all is fine.

Yeah, now that you mention it, I was getting the same sort of behaviour last night when tinkering with new account set-up.  I'd get the "no connection" error in the same context each time (submission of new account info), but in all cases, my account was actually created.

I had this problem today in a well 3g covered location.

I have this problem as well but only in 3G / Edge. Never had the problem with WiFi

So I finally got to play with Tactics Trainer. Here's my experience:

  1. I'd like to see more time before the first computer move is made. It happens so fast, I'm not always sure which piece moved. Yes, there's a yellow outline around the starting square and the square that the piece moved to but that breaks my concentration to search for it. Also, I'd like to see what piece was captured by the opponent's move. That helps to understand more of the tactic.
  2. I like to step through the tactic even if I get it correctly. However, when stepping back through a tactic using the arrow keys, oftentimes (not always... but more often than not) I cannot step beyond the first move in the sequence. It simply will not go forward or backwards. I will hit the arrow key to step forward and it will make the first or even second move, but after that I can no longer step forward or even backwards.
I have another strange error that happens if I let the tactic screen sit for about a minute. Something about "Alert: " and then a list of the moves in the tactic. I should have snapped a screenshot... bad beta tester!! Laughing I'll snap one this evening if it happens to me again.
OpeningGambit

Ah yes, the 'Alert' thing.  That comes up when you hang around in Online Games, too.  I should have taken a screenshot, too!  I will next time!!

The "Alert" thing Erik explained in the previous beta release -- it's there for debug only, you can get it by shaking the phone.  Supposed to be removed for GA.

How does one take a screenshot with the iPhone?  I don't even know how to do that. Smile

Enormous_Gastropod

Press the power button on the top of the phone and the home button simultaneously to take a screen shot. Here are good instructions.

I was watching videos and when I hit "play" for one of them, the screen froze for maybe 15 seconds and I saw this unusual visual anomoly:

It went away and the video began playing as normal. It doesn't seem to be a big deal.

And here's the infamous alert that isn't really a bug after all:

13) In Online Chess, when you're looking at a game and you hit the double-arrow to go to the next ready game, I had previously posted that the player ratings do not update (both -1).  Now that I have several games under 24 hours, I can tell you that the "clock" indicating how much time you have to move also does not update.

Spiffe

Do you want us to keep testing this version, Erik?  You had previously posted that you were trying to submit it to Apple by Friday; did that happen?  Or did you decide to make one more beta version before the official drop?

Just curious to know if you still want us poking around and reporting bugs.

erik

no need to report. new version coming next week.

Spiffe

Ok, thanks.  One thing I did happen to find:

14) In Online Chess, one of my opponents played a conditional move.  When I played my move, there was no indication of such; it just looked like my move was done and I moved on to the next game.  I didn't notice until looking at the game list again that it was still my move in that game.  I followed up with that opponent and confirmed that yes, he did play a conditional move, so it wasn't like he just happened to move quickly.
