Bug Reports for v 0.025

For some reason I still can't see any games that are on my move. I only see a list of finished games.

Ousland

That was my problem Enormous_Gastropod!!!! Try opening all the finished games on the iphone and on chess.com. I´m not very sure about how I solved the problem.

When I had your problem I couldn´t create a new game. I did all the process but the game was never created.

Bye

1) Push notifications are also still not working for me.

Enormous_Gastropod

Thanks for the tip Ousland. I started to look through each of the finished games, but after about 8 of them something buggy started to happen. I would open a game and only see the board and none of the controls. Everything else was white. A picture is worth 1,000 words...

I quit the program and came back into it and tried to finish opening my old games. After about 8 or ten the app crashed and I had to reopen. I was only able to get one more finished game opened before it crashed while trying to open the second game. I reopened. All finished games had been opened. I tried to create a new game. I supposedly went through but I don't see any outgoing challenges in my profile page.

I have a total of 3 games where it is my move.  2 of the games are with the same person.  Anytime I try to make a move in any of my games, it doesn't let me.  After trying and trying, none of the pieces move, and within about 10-15 seconds, i get a popup -- here is a screenshot of it:

I have uninstalled and reinstalled multiple times and still get the same problem.  Also, you might want to update the version number in the "About" section.  I know the right version is on the splash screen when you first start up, but just in case we had to check the version again and didn't want to restart the app.  Is anyone else having this problem?

KnightNotHorse

Update:  I restarted the entire unit (iPod touch) and now can make moves in some of my games, but not all.  It still seems somewhat random which games I can make moves in.  Here is the screenshot from the latest game I can't move in (and its my turn).  Note the gray dot at bar at top, as well as strange ratings, and note lack of moves in game that clearly does have moves in it:

Earlier, on one of my games, I was white - look at the status bar at the very top (my "dot" seems gray):

and then on this next game, the ratings of the players at the top was funky:

and then when I shut down the app and restarted it, the settings go back to normal.  I hope this helps -- I hope my bizarre case is just a rarity.  Frown

Same problem with trying to make a move - it won't let me then shows similar error message about game id, time stamp and moves.

Also, when I open an online game where I'm black it always show it with white at bottom and I need to flip board.

Also, typo on videos when it has quotes in description it comes up as "  and 1&quot.

I had that picture many times on the before version. The problem often apear when changing from "online chess" to "computer".

I´m sorry I dont know how I solve this...

The chat bug is still there...you can't scroll up more than a few comments...

Every other button is working fine for me in Online Chess.

The Tactics Trainer is perfect, as is the computer.

Creating a new account:

Creating a new account is very impressive and very smooth, but:

When you sign up for a new account, the countries list is only in order for just over the first half of the countries, then it is random for the other half.

Of course, I closed my account afterwards!  Tongue out

Push notifications:

I'm not sure if this is a bug, or if it's just something that can't be fixed, but the red number showing how many games it's my move doesn't change unless I go into the app.  Then, if I leave, it will have updated it, but it only updates it if I do that.

Playing as a guest:

I think the whole guest idea is a very good one.  There's just one thing: I don't know if this is deliberate or not.  When you try to watch a video as a guest, you get the error message:  'This movie format is not supported.'

If this is deliberate, and you need to register to watch videos, then I think the message needs to show that.

Very occasional quirk:

Very occasionally, when you click 'Videos', nothing happens.  Nothing happens when you tap it again.  The third or fourth time, the app inexplicably closes.  This has only happened a couple of times, and is certainly odd...

Videos:

The videos feature is generally very, very good.  But I've noticed a couple of bugs.  They are mainly to do with skipping parts of the video.  It is not very smooth when you skip parts of the video.  I'm not sure if this is anything to do with chess.com, but I tested it and found a problem, so I'll report it.  It's only minor, but the sound and picture reacts very, very slowly to your action, making the sound very irregular.  It takes a while to get back, and it has often gone back a little bit in the video from where you asked it to go.

And also, on a couple of videos, halfway through the advert for upgrading your membership, it cuts out mid sentence, and goes back to where you left off (whichever page of videos you were on).  Also, when you've finished a video, wherever you go in the app, the sound (but not picture) starts again of the video you've just watched.  The only way to get rid of it is to quit the app, and come back.

Vacation Mode:

This isn't a bug: more of a suggestion.  Maybe in the settings you could add an option to go into 'Vacation Mode'?  People just using the app, and not the site itself, would lose all their games on time if this was not included.

And just one last thing...

This won't be a problem for most people, but sometimes my mum uses the app, and I'm sure some others will be sharing the app.  But the settings are universal for the app: they aren't changed when you log out and log in again as someone else.  I don't know if that is a problem or not, but if the vacation mode idea was used, then that would need to be changed.

But the whole app is absolutely brilliant!!!

Thanks for a great app, clearly with lots of work having gone into it!  SmileSmileSmile

2) Red desktop notifications -- ok, I see one pattern here.  It updates when I go into the app; currently I have 16 games in which it's my move.  If I go into Online Chess and view 10 of them using the Fast Forward button, then when I exit, the desktop notification will now show 6, not 16.  If I re-enter the app and then close it without viewing any games, it will show 16 again.  Not sure what this is supposed to be showing (games in which it's my move, or un-viewed games?) but that doesn't seem right.

3) I notice that when I look at a game, it now shows my rating and the rating of my opponent -- nice!  However, when you hit Fast Forward to view next game, it shows both ratings as (-1).

4) Tactics Trainer now shows a clock -- nice!  However, when you view the solution, the clock resets to 5:00 Computer.  Not a huge deal, but I doubt that was intended.

Spiffe

5) Playing vs. Computer -- frequently taking a long time to make moves, like 30 seconds or more.

6) Playing vs. Computer -- the clock does not appear until after you hit the Question Mark button to see analysis and come back.

7) Playing vs. Computer -- the clock, what is this for?  It shows 0:00 most of the time.  One game I was playing, it suddenly started keeping time (counting down from 5 min), no idea why or how to recreate.  I let my clock expire, and no action.  Then the computer's clock expired, no action.  I also see nothing in the settings that controls whether or not it's a timed game, or how to change that.

8) Playing vs. Computer -- app crashed towards the end of the game.  Not sure what triggered it -- could have been hopelessness (it was down 12 pts), could have been that I mouse-slipped (finger-slipped?) a move, took it back, and then immediately made another one.

I find that when you create a new account, if you choose a country other than the US, the form is a bit muddled when you return from country selection:  I always have to re-type my password (again!) and I have to hit Return on the virtual keyboard to see the submit button.  Sometimes it seems like the form has migrated down in the screen area so I can't see all the controls.

OpeningGambit

On the analysis board, for some reason there is a timer, written in white.  It always says 'OpeningGambit' on one side, and 'OpeningGambit' on the other side.  It is not there every time.  Sometimes it has one side couting down and the other saying 0:00, sometimes, 0:00 on both sides.  Not quite sure what this is about.

When I open the analysis board, if both sides of the clock say 0:00, then the buttons at the bottom of the screen disappear, and there is just a white space.

Oh, and possibly on, the chess against the computer, maybe the light bulb button (the hint) could show you the move, without actually making it.

But again, more of an idea than a bug fix.

I'm still running into the same problem as the previous version, in that my chess960 games are not listed.

9) I am frequently getting a "No Active Internet Connection" when playing Online Chess.  I've seen this since the first version, but I've seen it in enough locations now that I am pretty sure the problem is with the app, and not with the actual connection.  I've seen it on both WiFi and strong 3G connections.

The behavior is this: I bring up a game where it is my move.  I wait maybe 5-10 minutes. (I like to think deeply.)  Then I finally select my move & confirm it.  Now I get the error.  My move has actually been transmitted to the server; I just can't pull down the refresh to the client, and no subsequent games will show anything either until I restart the app.  After restart all is fine.

Yeah, now that you mention it, I was getting the same sort of behaviour last night when tinkering with new account set-up.  I'd get the "no connection" error in the same context each time (submission of new account info), but in all cases, my account was actually created.

10) In one of my Online games (vs. happyhenry), my opponent has offered a draw.  The time on the game list ("2 days") shows up in red, which tipped me off that maybe something was up, but there is otherwise no indicator on the game that tells me that specifically; I had to check on the web site.
