Kb4 was optimal because I have access to both b5 and c4

this looks bad for black, but you also forgot to count moves so that you get 50 move rule

I don't think 50-move is a concern here. It should become clear soon if he can force the issue here.

I think I will run into a problem: My bishops will run out of diagonals as the board shrinks.

 

Also, unless everything starts in the corners, I don't think 50 moves will come into play.

I don't see what Ke4 is, that's not progress. Bd8+ seems the way forwards.
