Greetings! Is there a specific number of moves I should calculate when addressing checks captures and threats? Some chess players say calculate up to three moves while others say at least five moves in if possible.

thank you in advance!

You should first work on not blundering a piece in one move and capturing your opponent's piece if they hang it in one move.

Really? I’ll keep this in mind and use this as my main calculation method.

When do you think would be a good time to start playing in OTB tournaments? Right now I’ve been playing Bots and people online but I’d like to eventually play in a tournament.

when you beat the 1000 bot

As a beginner you should focus one move at a time, finding the best move each time. Or you can learn openings/counters and play like a book until you understand why these moves are made (a little more advanced)

Any tips on how to practice calculations?

Only during the climax of the game do you calculate as deep as you can. You'll know when the climax occurs.

At the 1900 USCF level, I've never calculated past 5 moves outside of the endgame. The majority of the time, you're evaluating 2, maybe 3 moves ahead.

In the endgame, you'll need to go past 10-15 moves sometimes, but good endgame theory can act as a guidepost.

Outstanding advice!
