The compulsory challenge means that you will not earn any chess tokens for any other challenges (tactics, puzzle challenge, etc.) until you complete the compulsory challenge this week.
This week’s compulsory challenge is to play one G15; d10 game and posting online. I think some of you played more G15; d10 games than you posted last week. Maybe that game would not have won a brilliancy prize, but there is always one thing (at least) that you can take away from any game. HINT: When looking for a good matchup, try these steps when posting your challenge:
Set your rating range so that you will be playing somebody no lower than 50 rating points lower than you. You may also choose to set the rating ceiling at 200+ rating points higher than you.
Click play and wait for someone to accept your challenge.
If you really cannot get anyone to accept your challenge, then I will allow the following substitutions:
Join a Chess.com tournament with a minimum of 10 | 0 control. If you join a Game 30 Swiss Tournament, you will earn double points.
Post and annotate a game from Saturday, Jan 5, FIDE Quick Chess Tournament in Des Moines.
When done post the game on the Pawn Stormer “Game 15, d10 Shared Games Forum” and annotate one position where you could have taken the game in a different (preferably better) directions for you. Here is the step by step instructions. I have posted two games; one I lost and one I won.
In the dialogue box at the bottom, click on the chessboard icon, “Insert Chess Game or Diagram” icon
Click on “Load from URL” and paste the url that you copied in Step 4.
Navigate to the position that you want to comment on.
Right click and chose “Set Begin.” This will post the game showing the game from this position (not move 1).
Move the pieces to insert the alternative line that you want to share. Use the “comment before” and “comment after” to insert your comments about why this is better and why you did not play it (tactical reason). Feel free to turn on the computer to check your analysis at the end.
Click “insert” to save the game in the dialogue box.
Click “Post” to post the game on the forum.
Alternatively, if you played the game elsewhere, you may do so starting at Step 6 and instead of “Load from URL” in Step 7, copy and paste the pgn or enter manually.
After meeting the COMPULSORY CHALLENGE, you may earn additional chess tokens with the following standard activities.
♟ Identify the plan at various stages of the game referencing Silman's list of imbalances.
♟ Demonstrates an understanding of the where your play could have improved with examples of possible continuations outside the moves actually played. (Refer to the plans identified in the previous step.) I want to see a series of specific moves/variations (e.g. tactics that execute the plan). Four or more moves deep is plenty.
♟ Demonstrates an understanding of the plans for the opponent with examples of possible continuations outside the moves actually played. Focus on possibilities you opponent missed and steps you can take to slow or stop the opponent's plan. I want to see a series of specific moves/variations (e.g. tactics that execute the plan). ♟ Identify tactics not played in the game and/or moves a player should have played to prevent the execution of the tactic that did occur in the game. I want to see a series of specific moves/variations (e.g. tactics that execute the plan). Four or more moves deep is plenty.
♟ Reflect upon how you felt during the game. Did you just come off a loss or win and what were your expectations going in? Did you feel comfortable or uncomfortable in the opening and why? Did you reach an endgame position that you had studied? Heading into the last couple of rounds, was there something at stake (e.g. placing, trying to reach a positive score, improve your rating, etc.).
