Communal Variant Tier List

Sort:
Avatar of imchesspro0930

How this works: This is a Communal Variant Tier List, this list strives to achieve a singularity in variant tiering, to balance out our very distinct opinions. These votes will be accumulated using Strawpoll, further variant tiering will be explained later.

All these polls will be registered in @brasterze , as a communal variant tiering account. I got permission from him.

The order of these polls will be random, with a 1 day interval, every poll lasts for 2 weeks. The final polls will last for 3 weeks.

There are these options. Options marked in red may only be voted twice during this forum's entire lifespan, Options marked in Orange may only be voted ten times. and the people voted will be counted in my personal space. Calculations will be done in average of the voter's scores. You may decide to comment to change this system, and I will evaluate about it if it follows with a fair justification, The respective amount of points will be registered depending on what you vote. Creators of such variants may not vote, but can appeal at the comment sections the tier they want their variant to be. If the reasoning is thorough, the points will be counted towards calculation. I will be lenient on this.

the assigned tiers will be the same as points getting in, the assigned tier will be the tier closest to the average score of the votes.

The variants appearing in these polls are custom variants, thus Courier Chess or Chess960 will be excluded. Write in the comments the historical variants you want to see.

These polls will not be anonymous, but there won't be voter weight, results of each poll will be written on the bottom of this forum. I may vote, but the weight of such votes will be the same. Votes from the Testing Team will be doubled, as well with doubling such players who has a variant rating in the respective variant higher than 1900. And a quadruple instead of a double (quadruple means multiply it by 4 times) with players with their ratings higher than 2200. These 2 bonuses multiply, thus Jack's vote on Villagers Chess would count as 8 votes. This system is for accurate tiers, thus I am sorry if your vote doesn't count, but I want to weigh more on people who knows what they're doing.

Every voter must play atleast 3 games of such variant. These games may include futers. These games need to be over 10 moves. Villagers Chess is excluded from the second criteria, Please write your chess.com username on the name column so I may check. Votes from voters that do not fit in this criteria will be invalidated, and these games include games on variants-test, thus it will be checked as a last resort.

100% support this effort, I think that it will be interesting to see at the end how all of the variants are ranked

Avatar of imchesspro0930

Thanks ;D, I will try to stay transparent.

I am thinking to double the influence of votes from The Testing Team, as I believe their opinion is generally more polished. Does anyone have opinions towards or against this?

Avatar of wolyn

You could calculate the influence from the rating

Avatar of thundertoad2379

votes=1+1 for every 250 above 1500 in their rating and is multiplied by 1.5 if they are on the testing team

Avatar of VishTheFish771

I agree with thunder toad, your rating should also affect this vote

Avatar of thundertoad2379

Maybe +1/2 vote for every 125 above 1500 actually.

Avatar of thundertoad2379

Maybe that but not starting until 1750 because there are a lot of 1625 beginners that just got lucky against other beginners.

Avatar of VishTheFish771

… I’m only 1723 or smh at setup/atomic, but that’s mostly because I get paired with 2100+

Avatar of NoWellOkay

that sounds like an excessive amount of calculation, also not all rating are transferable

Avatar of thundertoad2379

I'm stuck at 1500 in horde and setup. 1600 in atomic, 3 check, fog of war, and thermopylae. AND 1900 IN SPELL CHESS LETS GOOOO!!!

Avatar of wolyn

I suggest that the influence of active/ranked players would be the first two numbers of their rating and of everyone else would be 10.

Avatar of VishTheFish771

Ok

Avatar of thundertoad2379

the default is 1500

Avatar of thundertoad2379

so that is a bad idea

Avatar of imchesspro0930

I think everyone's vote should count. If we do by rating, someone like phongtesuto's vote in rubicon is half of the whole opinion, and higher rated players are much more likely to vote better. so I would say my current system is better, or atleast everyone's equal system.

Avatar of wolyn

Three games are not enough to assess a variant's value properly. A voting system based on ratings could also increase variant popularity.

How many do you think is appropriate for a variant?

Also, the problem is just to get a voter right, you have to spend like an hour trying to fulfill those requirements.

Avatar of wolyn

Non-ranked players would have 10 points.
