Too risky in hardcore if he doesn’t have eGap or anything. Could fall from height, or into lava…I strip mines once directly into a deep dark. It was massive, like 50 blocks tall and at least 5 chunks wide. I clutched, but that’s not the case for everyone.

Its safe, do this:
Chop a 30-50 logs, then craft them all to ladders (planks→sticks→ladders)
Dig down 2×1. When you step on block one, mine block 2. When you step on block two, mine block one. You wont fall like this
Finally, after you dug to y-58 place ladders to go up

True. I only ever dig the one block at a time, cause you’ll lose 2 times the pickaxe durability. I suggest using stone pickaxe to get down, but once there is ores you need use iron.
