One of the earliest lesser known blues greats is Blind Willie Johnson. An influence on artists as diverse as Nick Cave and Lou Reed, Johnson was a preacher who played gospel and blues in the 1920s. One of the first bottleneck players, some legends say he used a knife and laid it across the strings. It doesn't get much deeper than Blind Willie Johnson:
We all know the origin of blues was in the southern U.S.. The cotton fields, the delta, It was the release for suffering and servitude.
Gospel praised god, the promise of a better afterlife. Blues on the other hand came via the devil. It was the reflection of the here and now.
This is one of the earliest, and still one of the greatest blues classics ever recorded dealing with that universal theme of suffering, the relationship.
