DGT Angel 'Winged Horse' Mode - Early Access Preview

As a thanks for all the great comments I thought that I would share a preview version of the next step...Winged Horse mode.

This will be built into the next release of the Cherub client when I have fixed the things I haven't fixed because I was working on this!  You can play with it now happy.

Things you will need

  1. A very cheap and light projector (about £30/$40 should do it).  I went for this one in part because it has a tripod mount built in.  Ignore the bad reviews from people with inflated expectations, we are projecting on a chess board, not watching a movie.
  2. Ideally a Chromecast.  Not strictly required but a lot neater since it avoids the trailing HDMI cable.
  3. Some way to point the projector at the board.  Mine is on a light stand for now but I accept that this doesn't look great in the living room.  I have in my head the idea of cannibalising a floor standing cantilever lamp but that is for another day.

Usage

  1. Run DGT Angel as you normally would (no software updates required).
  2. On the PC running the Cherub client open Chrome and go to this link (available until the next client release).
  3. Cast the tab of your Chromecast or for HDMI drag it onto your second screen and hit F11.

Notes

  • The projector does not need to be directly over the board or on a specific side - you can adjust the projection angle on screen (make sure you match the A1/H8 squares on the board)
  • Make sure the projector is set to 16:9

Known Issues

  • The 'Mismatch' message does not always clear until the next move even is the board is in sync (this needs to be fixed in Cherub)
  • The web page errors on Safari/IOS (you need to go to the page from the PC running Cherub - just adding as a note)
  • Irritatingly there is a typo in the gif above (it's already fixed)

All feedback, questions and projector mounting designs welcome.

Wow, amazing. Will you be doing a Mac version at all?

Thanks

Me, realistically, no.  That, however, does not mean that there will never be a Mac version.  There is a detailed answer (comment #19) about it over on this thread.

Thank you anyway. Keep up the good work! It's very impressive what you do.

Winged Horse mode does look pretty cool although with a clearer computer voice style I may not bother with the projector.

As an aside, could "Pegasus" be the word you are looking for? happy.png

The new voice is already done along with a bunch of other stuff including a single page clock.

Honestly though, after much testing, I think it makes playing transformative.  You can move the pieces much faster without lifting your eyes from the board.

It is indeed. I did wonder how long it would take for someone to pick up on that  happy.

Oh, that took me far too long to notice!  My friend has a Pegasus board and says it is fantastic

Easy to understand why after using this.  Seeing the moves on the board makes games flow much better.

I was toying around with getting one too and that sparked this idea.  Cost (to be practical) being the biggest concern, but £30 for a ‘posh’ Pegasus seems very reasonable.  It also doubles as a handy over the board light.
