Different Board Style

@ignoble, if there are a flip board icon next to each player to change to that players perspective, then you can always flip back with a single click. I know that is a bit different to how things work in live chess, but I think it would make sense to work that way.

Here is the direction we are headed in for the interface. Instead of a circle indicating who's turn it is, we have a colored bar to the side of the board. The clocks will also be dimmed or bright based on who's turn it is.

Initially, Erik did not us to add the complexity of promoted queens, but I have always felt the need to have some kind of indicator. If the players demand it, I'm sure I can bring up that subject up again. If you ever need to make a queen trade, it's nice to know you're trading for 9, not 1. At the time, we had considered a simple + on the front of the queen, like so:

Looks good to me thumbup.png Thanks for the update.

I like the idea of subtle show who's turn it is like that. It's a smart way to do it. I think some players might play for a while without noticing these clues since they don't know what to look for, but once people catch on I think it is good.

It's a bit of a shame if the profile pictures don't fit. It's something I can live without though and I think you would need relatively big pictures if you want to be able to see them clearly. If it is a matter of space and it looks better without them, then I think it is good. I like using the currently empty space like this.

I think the + sign on a promoted queen makes a lot of sense. Maybe you can start a poll if people want that indicator and if people want it you can show the result to Erik.

Overall I am really happy with the development of this variant and the transparency on what you are working on. Very good communication with the members.

Those little grey boxes next to the clocks are placeholders for profile pictures. They'll be there.

It's been a lot of fun to release this as a prototype and get continuous feedback as we get ready for a beta release. Getting close now. Thanks for all your help, you have all been awesome!

I see, good happy.png

Out of curiosity, what happens when someone has a really long username? I'm not sure what the character limit is, but I imagine you might need to put some characters on a new line or something for big names.

I don't find the ability to rotate to be particularly useful. From a players perspective, you don't usually have time to evaluate the board from other player's views. Flip board is used very little in Live chess. Plus getting back to your view would require a few flips. From an observers and commentators perspective, it is usually best to stick with one orientation of the board, which is red's view.

Battle, I agree with this assessment. For Spector's this could be a nice feature but for players too many other things to think about to even have the time to flip and look at it from others position. If its a 3 day game per move then I can see it.. but I don't think people want to play a game for a year happy.png and this game seems better fitted for the fast and furious crowd vs the (*dang cant think of an old slow movie- one of you will have to add the reference..)

Lawrence of Arabia was the movie you were looking for, Yoda. Or the more modern English Patient. Bot great films, but the kind where it's time for another haircut by the time they finish.

I don't think we'll need to truncate on web, Martin. We have plenty of space for those usernames to fit. Mobile web, on the other hand will require some truncation.

Still can't believe that people are playing this on phones... crazy.

I just checked and the maximum characters in a username is 20. For some reason I thought usernames could be much longer. In terms of space I guess it can maximum take about 4 times as much space as the current "Username" text.

Comparison:

Username

WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

Of course usernames that take up a lot of space is rare and should not be a big issue, just something to keep in mind. Looks like truncation on the web might be necessary to me, but idk.

Not sure how I missed your update post in here but I like the + and the bar/time clue you have those are great improvement simple yet effective.

I agree. In addition it could be good to have an option to have pieces facing the same direction as that players pawn moves. Also I heard colorblind person might prefer to have black pieces instead of green, so having that option could be good as well.

Me too!

Here is another version:

No cross in middle

Only circles next to players

Pieces look towards the centre.

I’m not sure that’s a good idea
