I'd like to play.
First Omega Chess Game

The diagram seems to be off. The columns are labelled differently on the white side and the black side of the board. I'm assuming this was a mistake, and the white side is correct. In that case my move is:
h7
That is, king's knight pawn forward one.

ichabod801 is right. I was in a hurry to make the diagrams and messed up. I will try and fix it as fast as possible.

This is cool. I'll be watching you guys. Hope you like this game, but I'm sure you'll offer up your honest opinions. (And yeah, the files should be labelled as on the white side.)

qixel, just to make sure, can pawns promote to champions or wizards?
Also, I can create another Omega Chess game if you'd like. In fact if anyone wants any new variant game made, tell me and I'll do it as soon as I can.

Yes, pawns can promote to champions or wizards; anything except a king.
And you don't have to create another game just for me; I wouldn't have time to play anyway. I'm trying to finish up a bunch of other variants I'm playing elsewhere, but I will definitely play someday. (I'm just excited I'll be playing my first live standard chess game here on Wednesday...it takes me a while to get up to speed on things !)
But I hope you get another game going for others. I love to watch.

It seemed like it might be an issue with this variant, so I decided to try it out. While the three square pawn move does help in getting to the center, you still have further to go to get your pawns from the center to your opponent (if he holds back and plays hypermodern). Furthermore, the extra space should allow the hypermodern player to have a less cramped position than normal, even if the classical player takes over a majority of the board.
The flipside is that there are more leapers in the game. It seems likely that this will weaken the effectiveness of pawn chains as defensive barriers. This may hurt the hypermodern player, depending on how the oppositional qualities of the new leapers play out.

That is so true.
P.S. I don't work for Omega Chess, though sometimes I sound like it. I can just as easily wax rhapsodic about changgi to anyone who cares to listen. But I'll save that for another day.

At my level of chess understanding, I had to read that 4 times before I understood what you were talking about.

In my opinion, the center isn't as important in Omega Chess as in chess, but I'm just a woodpusher. In fact, I'm not even a woodpusher...more of a sawdust pusher. Let's hear what you guys think about the center as the game progresses.

3. d3
one more pawn out there before i try to bring out my knights and champions.
I think the center is still of utmost significance becuse it's significance translates to other board games (like checkers and Risk). the difference is that the knights and champions take so long to get there and that the center is so much larger that the dynamics are only going to be somewhat different.

4. ... Nd7
I think the center is going to be much weaker here. For one thing, it's larger. The center for knights and champions is 6x6. Only the wizard is worried about the 4x4 center. It's too much area to control for slightly less gain (the king has more room to maneuver away from central attacks. Plus, I think the short moves for the new pieces is going to ruin the sort of opposition you see with the knights. That's going to make control of the center less useful in terms of blocking attacks.
Or, considering that I've never played this variant before and I'm only a middling chess player, I could just be blowing a lot of hot air. But hey, it worked when I was an undergrad.
Game over. Preachingforjesus won.
The rules for Omega Chess can be found in qixel's article.
Post your move using algebraic notation. The first post (this one) will have a move list and a picture of the board. Every time I see a new post, I will update the picture of the board and turn it so that the side who's turn it is comes up in front. Make sure you track this topic so that you know when it is your move. As soon as you join the game post something so that I know. The game will begin as soon as we have 2 people ready to go. Have fun!
