Well, if it's going to be the first game of this, I guess I better play it. I would suggest putting an "x" for promoted pieces, since they gain one square of diagonal movement.
First Rogue Elephant Chess Game

hmm... this variant looks far to humdrum for me. Two dimensions, no peice exchange or mutation, no changing board, 6 types of peices. BORING!

Sure.
lol @ D_Plew's comment

according to the rules list the bishops are nat on the board at the begining.
The bishop symbols are representing what now.

Good point. He replaced the knights with elephants when he should have replaced the bishops with elephants. So, where the elephants are now there should be knights, and where the bishops are now there should be elephants. I will try to fix that and post a correct diagram after dinner.

Oops.
I'll fix the diagram since it's my fault.
But at 7:30 US Pacific Time I'm leaving, and the rest of my problems are transferred to you.

I have observed that counselor, captain and charger all starrt with "C".
I recomend using the folowing notations for moves:
C = counselor
H = charger
A = captain
charger and captain using the second letter in like manner that knight uses "N".

Is it me, or is Oinquarki using Horton for the Elepant?

for piece names how about:
Unpromoted Promoted
Pawn Sargent
Rook Dragon
Knight Lord
Elephant Mastadon
Counselor Bishop
King

Notice that the elephants must promote on the seventh rank as they cannot reach the eighth. does any piece promote on the seventh, or just elephants?

we could promote king to sovereign.
Sovereign moves two squares in any direction, cannot jump pieces, cannot move through check.

I don't know about footman for the promoted pawn. How about Sergeant?
Generally pawns and elephants will promote on the seventh rank. However, you could drop a pawn on the seventh rank or an elephant on the sixth, and then they would promote on the eighth rank.
I don't want to promote kings or restrict drops, because neither of those are features of Shogi, which Rogue Elephant is meant to mirror. Not that there couldn't be another variant with those features, but let us try without.

From the brilliant inventor who brought you Upgrade Chess, here is his latest new awesome chess variant: Rogue Elephant Chess!
Here's the rules: http://blog.chess.com/ichabod801/icks-variants-iii-rogue-elephant
Upside-down queen = counsellor
When a piece is promoted, I'll put a little plus sign next to it. In the case of the counsellor, it will be replaced by a bishop.
