Gambit Gang Invitational #1

Okay, I am hoping that this group will not get disbanded this time!

I would like to announce our first Gambit Gang tourney.  I cannot make it private to just our group, but I can post an announcement in our group first about the tourney.

It will only be an 8-man tourney.

Question - do you want to pick one gambit, or an open gambit tourney?

I will wait a few days for responses to build.

boogaloo

I say just an open Gambit tournament.  More fun for me.

PeskyGnat

what's an open gambit tourney vs. say a thematic?

Sashie_VII

What about open gambit tourney with a must-accept-the-gambit condition? Plus double-matches against each opponent with the same opening, so that both plays each side of the gambit. Just an idea.

BirdsDaWord

Open gambit means that you play any gambit you want.  Thematic means I pick the gambit (most likely a popular gambit, so that people are interested).  But whatever anyone wants.

second_wind

We should def. have a double muzio gambit tournament!

BirdsDaWord

If everyone agrees, I will do that, but we want something that everyone would like.  Does anyone else want to try the Double Muzio?

boogaloo

Well... I didn't know what the Double Muzio was but I'm definitely down to try this Gambit.  16 games of it seems a bit much for me but the one thing that I know about chess is that the more chaotic positions you get into the better you are at handling difficult situations.

So basically, I'm a little scurred but BRING IT.

boogaloo

Oh.. but lets still see what others say.  There seem to be only 4 of us down for this right now.

sirprim

I'd like to try the double muzio. But I'll have to unsign from boogs latvian gambit tournament ;)

Sashie_VII

I don't know what the muzio is, but I'm definitely up for it (after I do my homework on the opening) Laughing

gambit1985

I think you should force a gambit. This can lead to a series of events instead of just the same ambiguously forced gambit tourney over and over again.

I don't know about the Double Muzio (because I don't know what it is!), but any gambit will do -preferably one where the pawn/piece stays gambitted (two t's?) for a while (i.e. not the Scandinavian).

BirdsDaWord

The Double Muzio involves two key sacs for White - a knight sac on f3 and a bishop sac on f7.  White may be down material, but he has huge attacking potential if Black messes up.  I will send a link to a Double Muzio game if I can find one shortly.

Okay, this link ought to get your saliva running!  Shirov uses the Double Muzio to checkmate his opponent in 17 moves!  Just saying the name Shirov let's you know it's a tough cookie to crack! :-)

We could do it like this:

Someone creates a tournament with a set (gambit-) opening. Number of participants is unlimited, but it starts on a certain date. And whoever wins the tournament has the right to choose the opening for the "Gambit Gang Invitational #2" and so on.

What do you think?

By wthe way, I'd prefer to make large groups in the tournament, this way we can see lot of games on that particular gambit.

gambit1985

I think Sirprim's idea of winner chooses is very cool. It gets a big thumbs up from me! Laughing

BirdsDaWord

I like the idea also.  The only problem is, I am not a platinum or diamond member, so I cannot generate a tourney bigger than 12 people with one bracket :-(.  So I normally shoot out an 8-man tourney.  Let's brew over this a couple more days, and so far it looks like it will be an open gambit tourney.  If anyone wants to pay for me to have a diamond or platinum membership (lol), I will gladly make any kind of tourney you want! :-)

sirprim

I just looked up our member list and we have one Diamond member in our group, it is: Polar_Bear.

maybe he likes to create the tournament for this group. Then we could have large groups, and maybe multiple rounds or whatever.

BirdsDaWord

Okay, I asked Polar Bear nicely.  We will await his response.  If he says yes, then we can set up maybe a 24-man tourney with (6) 4 man brackets, or maybe (4) 6 man brackets.  I like the idea of 4-man brackets personally, but we'll see.  I have never set up one, so I don't know how they work on this site.

Aitorus

Yeah, it sounds good, I will play the tournament!!
