KeyOK_UA

Could you please analyze my two games against a higher-rated player (relative to me)? I'm sorry that I'm asking for 2 at the same time, so, you can pick only first one, if you don't have time or wanna to deal with two games at the same time. Thank you, Fischwitsch:]

This was one of my games from an OTB FIDE rated tournament last month. What do you think I should focus on in my training based on this game? I am a 1500 right now, but don't have a full FIDE rating yet. I was playing as black against a 1480 rated opponent. My goal is to get to 1700/1800 FIDE by the end of 2025.

What do you mean by "oposity"?

Here are some things I noticed from your game:

1. Opening - Firstly, you need to try and get two pawns in the centre, and if your opponent gave you that chance on move one, take it. This meant that your opponent had the stronger centre, and meant that 4. d4 was not as strong as 2. d4 would have been. For example, 1. e4 d6 2. d4 e5 3. dxe5 dxe5 4. Qxd8 Kxd8 is a line which gives you a slight advantage as your opponent's king is weaker, and it is your move.

However, 5. d5 was a great move, taking space and making black's job just that little bit harder. Only other thing in the opening was 7. Bb5, as 7... h6 would have solved everything, and your opponent would have gained tempi and space.

2. Middlegame - Trading the bishop for the knight was not the best move, as your opponent had lots of dark squared weaknesses around his king, which his bishop is able to defend now, but you can't (or at least, it is much more difficult for you. However, the position is quite closed, and the centre very blocked, so I can see why you would then trade the other bishop. When your knight goes to c7, alarm bells should be starting to ring. From my point of view, that knight looks locked up, away from all the action, and looks kind of trapped. Retreating it would have been slightly better. Don't kick yourself for playing 16. c3, as from the clock position it seems as though it would have been hard to spot.

3. Endgame - Firstly, the queen trade was well executed, the only thing being you lost the rook for a bishop, but when you have so much material it becomes irrelevant. Bringing the king was the right thing to do, but to make the win even faster, place your rook behind one passed pawn and just push it, using your knight to defend the squares in front of the pawn.

Improvement: I think you should focus on bringing your least active pieces into the game, as well as doing puzzles for tactics. For calculation, I would recommend solving Mate in 5 puzzles, and visualising all the moves in your head. Openings, just get your pieces active, king safe, and put pawns in the centre. If the position is closed and blocked, knights are better, but it could open up and benefits the bishops. Your endgames seemed pretty strong.

(I have only annotated your moves, for the sake of time)

I hate weird openings like the queens indian, any thoughts on how to play against it?

Hi. This is one of the otb games I have played recently. I am 800 uscf as white against 1700 uscf (although I am a bit under rated) I was wondering if anyone had any additional comments on this game other than what I added?
