How do you get better at this game? I recently have lost a lot of rating points and I don't know where I am messing up.

Start out with this move.

Don't open lines towards your king.  Don't touch the d-pawn or f-pawn unless you've got something else blocking that diagonal or their bishop of that colour and queen have been traded off.  If you trade off a bishop, it may be worth putting your king on that colour if you can do so safely.  Don't let knights approach your king; a pawn on e3 is great for that as it covers the f4 and d4 squares.

Review your games.  Look at how people attacked your king and what you did to make it possible or could have done to prevent it.

Learn to defend.  Once you get better at that, start learning how to attack.

Open with 1. e4. In three check, White starts the game with a large advantage, but if you open with 1. e3? you are giving up that advantage. There are some YouTube videos of Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (number 6 in the world) playing three checks, I recommend watching them.

Don't throw away a piece just to get one check. This is a losing play. Develop your pieces to solid squares and watch for your opponent to blunder. Be careful and avoid making blunders yourself.
