The White Raven of Miquelon

No one knows if this is true.

In the market place of Miquelon there are many comings and goings and legends and myths abound.  One such myth concerns the White Raven of Miquelon who resides in the roof spaces of the market buildings.  There has been a white raven in Miquelon for hundreds of years, although its unlikely its the same one, though uncannily no one has ever seen a pair of ravens only ever one on its own.  It is a "protected citizen" and anyone caught trying to capture or harm it is immediately shot. The myth of the white raven is this..

Back in the dark ages there was a sorcerer called Aurus who could do magical tricks, predict the future and see into the souls of men.  Aurus had two sons, neither of whom had inherited his powers but he also had a daughter who had..but no one noticed because she was a girl and, back then, girls were only good for cooking and having children. Rasa, the daughter, was quiet and unassuming, just quietly getting on with life and wondering how it was that she always knew what other people were thinking and feeling.  The two sons were her opposite..rowdy, irresponsible and selfish they tried to work as little as possible and were often involved in swindling old people out of their life savings, and other activities that today would be called "politics". 

One day Rasa was watching her brothers and was overcome with the terrible presentment that they were plotting to kill their father and grab his money.  Because she had no proof but just "a feeling" she tried to warn Aurus but with no evidence  and just her word for  it, he just flew into a rage ,accused her of jealousy and disloyalty and turned her into a raven..a white one.  He said she could spend the rest of her days spurned by all creatures with an ugly cawing cry.

Rasa, or her ancestors, have flown through the skies of Miquelon ever since and the sight of a white raven is always followed by a death.

Aurus, predictably, was hacked to death by his sons.

Since reading this again, it occurred to me that you might wonder why Aurus couldn't see into the minds of his sons...well, that's because the gift of reading souls didn't work within families, unless you were a girl.😉

there is actually a park in Toronto with a white squirrel just like that.

I like the superstition attached to it.  Ölgard needs more lore.

like the Gnaw-Gnuk hears your teeth chattering, or the white raven fortells a death.

The Legend of the White Heather

Whenever anyone gets married, they stand underneath an arch of white heather..it is a tradition that goes back hundreds of years, and to mess with this tradition is go invite bad luck on the couple's marriage.

If anyone should wonder why this is, it is because a few hundred years ago a man called Amos existed.  Amos was rich, he had power and he had influence, but what he didn't have was a son and heir..cos basically , inspite of all we are led to believe, there ARE some very rich men who really can't attract a woman. Amos was many things but "nice" wasn't one of them.

In a neighbouring village lived Hildegard who was very pretty (AND nice) but she didnt want to get married.  She was enjoying the single life and training to be a warrior because she was, in the words of her instructor, "pretty handy with a bow and arrow".

The first time Amos set eyes on Hildegard he knew he must have her but she didn't like him and told him if he didnt get the hell off her land he'd get an arrow in his foot.  Amos was not going to take fuck off for an answer and forced himself on her and made her pregnant.

9 months later Hildegard gave birth to twins, a girl and a boy.Amos snatched away the boy to be his heir and Hildegard brought up the girl..no doubt hoping she might become the warrior that Hildegard never did. 

You can guess where this is going and i promise the white heather features soon.  The boy and girl twin had no idea the other existed, met at a tournament (which daughter of Hildegard won), fell in love, told their mum and dad respectively, got told they couldn't be lovers but could only ever be really good siblings, and, in despair, threw themselves off a cliff.  Where they fell there grew an acre of white heather..which thus came to symbolise true love (as opposed to symbolizing a messy death).

You are probably wondering what happened to Amos and Hildegard.  Amos died and left all his money to the woman he had wronged, well one of them, and Hildegard, who didnt want his money, donated it to a charity who  used it to build an orphanage called the Hildegard Amos Orphanage.  Its symbol is a sprig of white heather.

I like it.  I like the arch particularly, it's reminicent of the citizenship arch.

Small problem, there's no heather on Ölgard.

How about bog cotton?  It's white, fluffy, abundant, and we can always re-name it.

a propper wedding tradition is needed isn't it?

first, no one takes their partners name.  People keep their own name.  Marriage is not a legal construct, just a cultural preference.  All property ownership is determined the way it would be with any other "couple" brothers, business partners, mother and daughter, whatever.

Family law revolves around making sure children are adequately cared for.  Nothing to do with husbands and wives, or husbands and husbands or both or whatever (it's adam and eve, not adam OR eve after all..)

Daughters take their mother's name, sons take their father's.  So there are male and female sur-names as well as proper names.  Inheritance is taxed.  Heavily.

So... the only reason to be a family, is because you want to.  No "blood is thicker than water" bullshit.

dating customs.  proposals and engagements.  bachelor parties. weddings.  receptions.  anniversaries.

remember that Ölgardians aren't going to let some church, or the state tell them who or how to date or marry.

this has to be old traditions, with no influence of christianity
