If you can get 1 iron, I would highly recommend a shield. If a creeper is about to explode, you can just block it, and you won't take any damage. The same goes for skeleton shots. Also, use a stone axe, not a stone sword. You can kill any of the basic hostile mobs in only 2 hits with an axe.

thanks

maybe mine a area at about y=40-50? If your luck is bad then idk.

Maybe it’s a good idea to go strip mining, just dig to y level -59 and then continue to mine in a straight line

Firebreather14

I think hes talking about early game and digging to -59 might be difficult with some stone pickaxes

True but strip mining is the safest option plus you can you that same mine forever

I agree. A shield will help you a lot, and save you in many situations. An axe is also a much better weapon than a sword, and is able to two shot any hostile mob you will encounter in the early game.

Here's my advice:

Stuff you will want with you:

The minimum set of tools you should go to mining with is stone axe, stone pick, stone shovel, and a shield. Use the axe as a weapon, it does a lot of damage and is much stronger than a sword. Blocks are also nice to have, but you can get those on the go anytime.

Shipwreck strats:

If you are near an ocean, try to find a shipwreck instead of mining at all. Shipwrecks have 3 chests, one which gives food and supplies, one with paper loot(maps, books, feathers, and buried treasure maps)and one with treasure. All three are super useful, but the treasure and map chests are best. The buried treasure has really good stuff, and there are really easy tricks to find it(such as 9,9. You can google a tutorial on it). The treasure can contain iron, gold, lapis, xp bottles, diamonds, emeralds, or iron and gold nuggest. I generally get 10+ every ship because I'm a bit lucky, but you'd be unlucky to find less than 5 or 6 per.

Normal iron strats + caving:

I highly suggest caving and am gainst stripmining for iron because iron is very common, and can generate very high up. Find a small cave, or a massive hole/cave in the ground in the case of 1.18 (I wouldn't go deep until you have full iron armor and tools if you are a beginner) and look for iron that is easy to access, not too far down, or on the walls. Grab those bits quickly.

Numbers to know, and priority of crafting:

Craft an iron pick. I personally craft all my tools before armor(axe shovel pick) as those usually benefit me more. However, if you are a beginner, I suggest crafting armor first. You need 24 for a full set of armor, and around 35 or 40 for all the tools(including a bucket and flint and steel) + the armor. Iron should be adbundant enough that it won't take too long or be too difficult if you're careful. You can also make multiple furnaces to make smelting faster

Good Luck! You've got this happy.png

Have fun!

PS: It might be helpful to google a short yt vid about how to find the shipwreck chests if you don't know where they are in the structure, but you'll have it memorized in no time!

@garfield92037 not sure why you quoted me, because I almost personally almost never make a shield. grin.png

I was gonna start off my message by agreeing with you, but I forgot lol. That's why I quoted you.

Edit: I edited my original message to make it easier to read, and also to add that I agree with you

Guys, I'm kinda new to Minecraft so I have a question abt Minecraft. The question is: are axes better than swords or are swords better than axes cuz a lot of ppl use axe and say it's better than swords but every time I look at a sword in Minecraft, the sword is one more damage than the axe?

If you play on Bedrock Edition, (the version without an attack cooldown), swords are always better. In Java Edition, axes deal more damage than swords, but have a longer cooldown.

In Java Edition, an unenchanted axe is almost always better than an unenchanted sword, but a fully enchanted sword is usually better than a fully enchanted axe.

Hope this answers your question.

greypenguin

actually, in 1.18, you can get a lot of iron and coal from mining on mountains, which is way safer. it can prep you for when you want to go down low

ok, thanks. i was wondering why dream uses axes

greypenguin

dream uses axes because:

1. it doubles down as a wood chopper, and wood is always useful in speeruns

2. axes deal a load of damage in a crit, and break shields (if u were using a sword, you would have to swap to axe, attack, swap to sword, then continue. a lot of attack delay inbetween. also saves hotbar space(dont need to carry 2 weapons))

3. axes are very much his style. he plays at the end of the axe spectrum, doing a trade and getting out of there, then coming back to trade again. if, as a sword user, you dont do anything about this, ur gonna get steamrolled without much of a fight. a way to counter it would be to be smart about what you do, like purposely getting close before a trade so as to maybe get 2 hits in with a sword

ok thanks
