Currently when you're in live chess and see the variants you can hover over a question mark next to the variant and the text "Team up with another player and you can drop the pieces they capture." comes up. You can not click the question mark for more information, so I think the instinct for many would be to just try the variant and see what happens. I don't think learning by doing is necessarily a bad thing, but it might be frustrating to get paired with a partner that does not know the rules.

Thus the point of the thread ... makes for good quotes like @winquit points out.

I hesitated to say anything, but @mk43v3r fails to realize that there are 2 bishops in standard chess, too... just not on the same color. (Probably referencing 2 bishops of the same color.)

I agree: "Try before you buy"

Sometimes you get stuck with a novice or n00b, thus other threads (stream of consciousness)... "Ethical Chess (Bughouse Topic)," and "Kings & Elders."

The latter, "Kings & Elders" is abstract in it's intent. The former, "Ethical..." is somewhat more direct.

In summary: Such is life. If even online, you've gotta help bring people along... or skewer them in good humor (posting funny conversations that happen in team sports, among politics and other conversations worthy of being skewered and kebob'ed).

Yeah, if we go with the usual bughouse assumption of P = 1, B = N = R = 2, Q = 4-5, trading a queen for a couple minor pieces or a minor piece and a pawn isn't all that big of a sacrifice.  If that's what it takes to shut down your opponent's attack or to blast their king open, it's certainly worth it.

I almost want to evaluate the pieces P=0.5, B/N/R = 1, Q = 2 to emphasize that loosing material is not such a big deal in bughouse compared to orthodox chess. Then giving up a queen for a piece in order to attack or defend better can be compared to sacrificing a pawn in chess and most people don't resign in chess just because they lose a pawn or two (especially in bullet/blitz).

Of course it is the relative value of the pieces in bughouse that counts and should have nothing related to chess at all, so evaluating with half points would be a bit silly.

The problem with downplaying material too much is that losing material influences both boards.  But even so, it's not as critical as in normal chess.

Playing OTB, we sometimes balance unbalanced teams by taking a rook off one board and giving it to the opposing partner before the start of the game.  It's essentially a two-rook advantage - except that the rooks are often slow to get into the game anyway, so it may really be little more than a one-rook advantage.

This turned into an interesting discussion.

My introduction to Bughouse (OTB) didn't have anything like this. And, thought I've always looked down on historical "odds" games (taking a piece off), I wonder if this wouldn't have been a beneficial introduction to Bughouse (and/or Crazyhouse).

An interesting thought. Kudos @MGleason.

I think "odds" games work better in variants such as bughouse/crazyhouse and maybe even 960 than in standard chess.  In standard chess, you're drastically changing the opening (even in rook odds where you choose a rook that is slow to get into the game, your goals in the opening are now different), so it's not really the same game.  In certain variants, opening strategy is significantly different anyway, and taking a piece off the board maybe doesn't change things all that much.

That said, even in standard chess, that's how I learned.  My dad would take some of his pieces off before the game; after I beat him five times, the handicap would shrink a little.
