Ideas for 2nd live tournament

Ok, a couple of organizational things I'd like to have your opinion on (or interesting idea)

1. Tournament format. This of course depends mainly on the amount of players we will have, but what do you think? Kick out, round robin, some kind of swiss-system variation, or something entirely different? let me know what you think

2. What to do with people going on vacation/having something else planned/not able to play for some other reason during the tournament. I think the best thing to do is to just wait till they're available (of course in some cases it's 3 weeks but there's no hurry I think), but someone might have some better idea.

that would be it for now, everyone's welcome to join the discussion, even people that won't participate.

I think a round robin, or whatever the tourney type where everyone plays everyone else would make vacation easier.  As there isn't a need to wait until a particular round starts to play each other.  People who are around will get their games in asap, and those that need to go away we'll need to wait for.  I think that more than a few weeks without a game though would need advance notice, lest we drag the tournament on indefinitely.

Further rounds, say the top 2 or 4 could enter a match system that requires a minimum of two games between players, and the first to 2 points wins.  In case of a tie, one keeps playing, and players alternate colors each game.

I'd also note that I really think we should have a time control with an increment in it of at least 5 seconds.  Thanks for reading!

I'm too of the idea that a kick out or round robin is better due to quickness and the more easily controlled and flexible rounds. With a swiss-like tournament we'll end up all waiting for someone wich isn't availaable.

But I think that we shold give a maximum of waiting time for the tournament as to not havve it too long. For example I anticipate that if the tournament is longer than until the 3rd July I'll wirthdrew as I'll actually have others wait for 10 or more days due to a vacation.

I'm completely at favor of some sort of increment.

Well the problem is that most people will probably be able to play only 1 or 2 games a week so there's no chance we will finish it by 3rd of July. More likely date of finishing this tournament will be somewhere around the second half of August

ok I've decided on the format and it will look as follows:

- we will split all players into two groups. At the moment there's 10 people registered for tournament so it will be 5 in each group if it stays this way.

- after the group stage we will have 2nd round semi final. Best player from group 1 will play second player from group 2 and best player from group 2 will play second player from group 1.

- winners of the above will play in round 3 which will be final

Let me know what you think and post any suggestion as this is still in development stage and can be altered. It's important though we will have this sorted by tomorrow evening.

I think the final round should have multiple games, like a miniature match.  e.g. play first to 2 points (1/2 pt for draw, 1 for win).  After 4 or 5 games if still tied then call it a draw.

Agreed, very good idea! I thought it might take ages to finish it, but the tournament will probably last very long anyway. 5 games to decide the winner and if after that we still have a draw, then we will decide the winner by 15 +10 games to first win. Does it sound good enough?

Very long just = more games though, as this isn't correspondence where we wait for a few to finish.  I know I'm playing this to play more slow games regularly, so I'm fine with that!

I'd say make it 4 games, so each side has each color twice.   Then after each pair of games that follows check for a winner.  Those 2 extra games could be g/15 w/ a 10 second increment if you like, but this isn't FIDE, seems like a slow tournament should stay a slow play tournament!

You're right, 4 games it is. If we won't have the winner by then, there will be pair of 15' +10" until the match is resolved. Looks like we have 12 players, I'll draw the pairings tomorrow and post everything in another news so the rules are clear to everyone.

Are you seeding people based on their ratings, or is it random?

it's gonna be random

Just one more thing, I think there should be a 3rd place game, as in losers of last remaining 4 (as in round 2) play each other for 3rd place.
