There is another book I really enjoyed (read a lot of it, did a lot of the exercises) which while fairly technical is rather exciting (at least to some) and has some fascinating things in it about the scope of information theory, and which happens to be free to download.
I'd draw attention to chapter 19 which deals with information in life (i.e. biology) and is generally readable, I think (with some reference to the basics).
