If it is with prize money, then I will consider it as a sport. If it is for retirees like us, it is a game to pass the time away.
It is a sport, it is a science, and it is an art.
Teacher- "What sports do you play, class?"
Student- "I play soccer."
Other Student- "I play basketball."
Another Student- "I play chess."

Neither...it is a form of art and a way of life 
chess is a board game. Sport is a competitive physical activity or game. So sport can mean either your physical sport like basketball or your mental sport like poker or chess. However, it seems that many are more inclined to say sports are physical games while chess and the like are more of a any game other than physical sports.
