Is there really a point in changing the fairy pieces' appearance like this?

You can get the old pieces via setting the piece theme to standard, via:
Settings -> Themes and Colors -> Piece Theme - Standard.

They are all much more confusing an less intuitive now. Was there a good reason to do this? Is there a chance this will be reversed?
I guess we can get used to it but they used to be intuitive as they depicted joins / parts of other pieces, making it easy to understand they are a compound / weaker version of some piece.
I'm looking forward to get an answer.
