Bird Attack

( b4 )

  • Bird Attack is very slightly aggressive, But it comes with a down side
Pros Cons
  • Gains tempo by attacking Black’s bishop
  • Risky if Black knows theory
  • Creates open lines for attack
  • Weakens queenside structure

HOW TO REFUSE IT

  • If black castles early after d3
  • This position leads to Giuoco Pianissimo Variation ( Refer PART 1 )

Continuation ( if black didn't castle )

  • This is a kind of structure which we will get

Some Important Moves and Their Reasons

  • Why pawn to a5 for black ??

- Pawn to a5 stops white to further push his a4 pawn
- a4 pawn push strengthen the whites queen side pawn structure

  • Why queen c2 for white ??

- It protects your e4 pawn which can be captured by black

  • Why knight g5 is very very important for white ?

- Ng5 generates a counter attack on black by attacking f7 pawn
- If we play any another move like h3 which seems very logical black can easily swarm an attack on whites king ( look below )

NOW LET US ANALYSIS WHAT EACH SIDE GET

WHITE

Pros

            1. White has a good bishop pair plus attacking initiative
            2. Good space advantage on the queenside and center

Cons

            1. Weak Queen side pawn structure ( why ?? we will study below )

BLACK

Pros

            1. Solid Position
            2. Solid Pawn structure
            3. Can easily attack on whites weak queen side pawn structure
by play c6 ( c6 simply challenges white b5 pawn and give black
an edge in the endgame because black will have 2 pawns and white will only have 1 pawn on the queen side )

Cons

              1. Passive position ( become active by playing h6 )
              2. Weak light square bishop
              3. Weak knights ( knights are good on g6 and h6 but they are defending not doing much )
