how do you make the program?

Actually, it's not mine, I copied it off of a book which has a lot of neat programs. It is Python Playground by Mahesh Venkitachalam (had to look that up). Basically, it scans the picture in lines, and converts each column of that line into whatever ASCII character of lightness matches it most.
