Launching new (web) notifications system

@wayne_thomas Out of curiosity, have you been a member of these clubs before?

I have cleared them now but this morning I logged in and as usual several clubs had new note alerts. I clicked and then returned to my notifications to find the alert remained but no new note, after several visits the alert was gone. TITANIC and Team United Kingdom HQ were a couple that I visited but I have dozens of clubs and each morning I get lots of American and Antipodean activity to catch up on as you will appreciate due to timezones. Usually one click clears each notification.

By the way, it seems okay now, one click clears the alert even with multiple notes.

When you dismiss some alert directly by click "x", it is cleared instantaneously. Automatic notification deletion after user engages with the content by following the notification link, i.e. club forum topic, happens asynchronously, in the background, so it can take few seconds for alert to actually be cleared until background job is processed. Sorry if I'm using use too technical vocabulary.

We had a small outage of the entire website this morning which may explain the lag in asynchronous notification deletion process you've experienced. Glad to hear things are working fine for you again.

@nikolaposa, when I get an arena trophy notification, it does not leave for some hours even if I click it or click 'x' (it does get back in some seconds).

I am aware of the outage, I had problems logging in, but not for long. That could be the cause, either way as I said all seems to be functioning correctly now (your technical jargon is fine, helpful in fact).

That shouldn't happen, are you still able to reproduce that? I've checked your notifications, you have 5 at the moment, none of them is arena trophy.

I agree, that could be very useful.

@gambitfan Did you clear them? I see that you only have 3 notifications at the moment.

Problem with old game notifications is that they haven't been auto-cleared, for unknown reason, probably due to outage we had at the time they were supposed to be cleared.

We are now considering a solution to fix those invalid game notifications in the background after user logs in, but in the meantime just clear them manually. Sorry for that inconvenience.

@nikolaposa, the Arena trophy notification goes away after some hours. The next time I win an Arena trophy I will inform you immediately.

All of my notifications just cleared themselves. Simultaneously replaced by this forum comment notification instead.

@iSpaceChess Are you sure? How many or actually what notification types you had before?

@nikolaposa, another problem is that you cannot click the notifications from the drop down menu at mobile view in vote chess.

I am sure, approximately a dozen club applications, 4 or 5 forums and 1 trophy. I was working through them, nowhere near the ‘Clear Alerts’ link. It doesn’t matter, I have a good excuse to sunbathe now but I thought I should let you know.

I believe that doesn't relate to changes we are launching now as we basically haven't made any UI changes. You can report that as a separate issue.

@iSpaceChess Yes, please let me know about any oddity, but that one sounded so odd that I would not know where to start to investigate it.

@Leon_Likes_Chess We are currently working a solution to automatically wipe all those stale game notifications upon login. It should be deployed later today. Until then please clear them manually. If you have a lot of them I can help you.

There is a post on the main forums of a member in this club that had a lot of alerts from a club where he was banned. That's probably not a very common thing but will probably generate some tickets when the new notifications go live to the rest of the site.

After user leaves a club, or is banned, he certainly won't be getting notifications for that club going forward. Whether his existing notifications from that club should be deleted, I think that is debatable.
