h4 is a fine opening! h3 is also good. f3 and f4 are also fine moves. Just like in regular chess opening up the queen in some way is good. f4 g4 h4 all work!
Lets analyze!

h4 is not a fine opening. Certainly not better than h3. I don't disagree with the rest.

h4 is an option. h3 is a better and more popular option. That's it. g4 is decent too. Pawn moves to your 3rd rank are considered better because you don't need to waste a move or two to defend the pawn. g4, the queen is defending the pawn but do you want you queen to be the one defending it? A big NO...you want pawns to defend pawns and not pieces..else you're gonna be passive.

@icystun, you can go ahead pawn sacrifices that at minimum don't get you into trouble. And you rarely see the pawns directly in front of your king being sacrificed.
@MegurineLuka999999 You can have a decent position if you manage to get you dark bishop outside the pawn chain.

well, if I play it in a wch game and win, will you change your mind?
no, unless you can prove the opponents' moves were optimal.

nah, the solution to your problem is to not defend your pawns, that's how you get active
As you probably know, you can't take that too literally. The pawns around your king have to be fortified or else the opposing queens can do nasty things.

1. h3 is probably the best opening in FFA right now, given how the game is currently played. 1. k4 is good for Solo.

The pawns in front of the king are not important if you control the board. h4 allows for quicker development of pieces later on for instance with g4. Just like in classical chess opening up your pieces is good.
The point of playing it in the wch would be to have top notch opposition, so your comment is kind of talking down the quality of play, how rude. Anyway, you can't prove anything the way you suggest.

I agree i4 is bad since it exposes the king.
Actually `i4` is good if played right. Leads to a draw game so i do not recommend it. My suggestion is either `j4`, `h3`, `g4`, or `f3`.

Good suggestions guys. We can say things like 'attacking is the best defense' or 'board control is everything'...just remember that you can't ignore the fact that you have a king like all other players.

Are you saying you analysed it to a draw? That would be quite something.

Just about my eval shows -.5 it's technically not a lost.
h3. h4 is generally seen as a weaker opening, as it allows the light green bishop to check you on f2.
h3 might not necessarily be the strongest move (we haven't come across all lines in 4PC, and it's still evolving), but it's most certainly the best move. This is because everyone (who is good at 4PC) knows the opening h3, and the subsequent lines that come from it.
For teams, there are many different openings, but the classics are:
h3 - d6 - g12 - k9 or L9 (both are used equally)
h3 - c7 - g12 - L8 (this is the standard FFA opening)
h3 - d6 - h11 - L9
h3 - c7 - h12 - L8 or L10 (L8 is more common, but L10 is better in my opinion)
