Excellent! Last but not least, you will need a Monstrous Manual. the other two books don't have information on monsters, so unless all you want to do is fight each other (that gets boring), you'll need this. Lemme see ...

And.  Oh, yeah, you can fight each other! Happens quite often. Let's imagine that we are running together. Let's say that I am lawful good. That means that I follow the rules and that the rules must benefit all of mankind. Let's say that you are a Druid. Druids cherish all life, including evil life. A small band of Orcs have attacked a small village and have killed a bunch of people there. You and I work together to put a stop to the onslaught of the people. We defeat the Orcs and send them on the run. That's not good enough for me. I am incensed! This evil must be smote! So, I mount my horse and take off after them. I intend to kill each and every one of them. They are evil by their very nature, and evil must not be allowed to live.  You see that the Orcs are on the run. You see that the Orcs no longer present a danger to the people of the town. I am about to commit, in your eyes, an act of murder: Those poor orcs were only doing what orcs do! Who is it that I think I am to go and kill every male, female and child orc in their lair!? So, you try to stop me. Maybe you cast a spell on me. Now, I am Lawful Good and you have attacked me in defense of evil! You defended evil in my mind, thus now, you are evil! I draw my sword. I will not back down from destroying these evil orcs. You will not back down from stopping my atrocity. You draw you scimitar and prepare your next spell. Because I am a paladin, I will not stop until you are dead ... And so our characters fight ...

What is lacking in online games is role playing. When you play D&D this way, with pencil and paper, your character is more than a digital representation on the screen, free to do as you wish that character to do. Your character in D&D has a background, a personality, views on what it means to be good or evil, opinions, thoughts and feelings ... that, all by itself, makes the old D&D a much different experience then you will find online.

The actions of your character are limited only by the lmitations of your character, the rules of the DM, and your imagination.

the DM can interfere in the players desicions?

Avatar of CaptainPike

The DM is God. The DM can do whatever they wish to do. Your character is killed? Lo and behold there happens accross your party a high-level cleric willing to resurrect your character. The players have irked the DM? Lo and behold, in the sky, a pair of ancient red dragons looking for a bite to eat! The players are making a decision that the DM doesn't want them to make? Lo and behold, a Solar (angel) appears and tells them what they must do!

A good DM is neutral in these affairs. If a DM does continue to interfere in the decisions of the players, then it becomes the DM who is playing the character instead of the character. This is sometimes difficult for a DM to do. Sometimes, our players make choices that can ruin the whole adventure, and hours of a DM's work and preparation. So it's hard to do.

Your character is killed? The DM shrugs his shoulders, announces that the character is dead, and allows the players to make the decision. The players have irked the DM? The DM calls a time out, drinks a cup of coffee and smokes a cigarette, then back to the game. The players are making a decision that the DM doesn't want them to make? The DM allows it to play out, allows the character to ruin the adventure, then puts his work up for another day, another time or anothe group of players. And who knows? Maybe this decision will give the DM ideas s/he hadn't even thought of to take the adventure in a whole new adventure that is just as much fun and surprising for the DM as it is the players!
