Can't you just use dispensers and firework rockets?

Um, you need a ton of coal, redstone, and dirt.  That is expensive and takes time to mkae.  it is also ugly.  The fireworks aren't realistic.  If u use dispenser, it is not reusable, but it is easier to make and is more pretty.

Well, the rockets are not reusable, but the dispensers are.

I handed over the Coliseum to my friend(mc username=robofrost, a play on the name "robert frost")

mine r pretty as ling as u see them from a distence.
