Muting of admins

Admins don't listen to my protests: "Please never invite me to an Arena, I don't like them". They keep inviting me. And blocking such Admins doesn't help, this regards only private messages, not the messages, that they send in the name of a club. 🤔

I don't understand, what do you mean by "the messages, that they send in the name of a club"?

I communicate with my club members by means of DM's, club announcements (formerly 'News') or forum topics. If a member doesn't wish to receive my DM's they can block me. If they don't want to see announcements they can disable them and the same for the forum.

Doesn't that solve the problem for the club member?

Or they can simply leave the club if they don't like messages from the club admins ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I hope I've misunderstood this but are you seriously saying that the facility for inviting multiple people to join a club in a single invite has been withdrawn after how many years?

Apparently it's a new security protocol that's been introduced according to a message from support. Just another blow to the clubs that kept this site running for the first 10 years and are now seen as an inconvienience.

Also totally contrary to the promise of better tools for club admins.

To quote the answer I had to my bug report: "I checked this out with the team and they've let me know that it still works. You just now have to paste it several times until all the names are populated as this is a security improvement."

I think the members of a club need to be open and responsive to the managers of a club. There should always be a means for managers to contact individual members. If members don't like the way a club is run they should move on to another club.

I don't use the spam button out of pity, because I'm an Admin myself, but the actual situation is absolutely absurd. 😡

Although I perfectly know, which events come next, I'm spammed with superfluous informations about coming events, mostly events, in which I couldn't take part anyway, because of rating limits and I am not able to defend against invitations to formats, in which I am not interested.

Why don’t you leave this club if the admins (who are volunteers) annoy you so much. You don’t have to be a member of any club. Admins are supposed to own and be in charge of the club. Why should you have more rights than they to decide how they run the club? Your right is to leave it.

We have sent out announcements letting people know how to alter their settings so they can control what they receive. Rather than do this they report us and get us muted. What more can we do?

Obifunk-Kenobi

To be muted is one thing, but that all of your content, at the moment you get muted, dissappears, causes much more trouble than a simple mute. It can destroy leagues, competitions and great matches as no one can see any information/organisation you gave. This is what really makes me angry.

Is anyone at chess.com listening?? If so, it would be great if they could show their face and give us some reassurance that these issues are being addressed.

I'd love to know the precise 'technical issue' that persuaded the developers to change a facility that's worked perfectly well for more years than I can remember - anyone know?

I've been asking staff for years to provide an intra-club messaging system based on the way we used to invite people to our clubs, allowing a list of club member names to be pasted straight in.

This would seem to be their response.

All I can hear is radio silence!

It is affecting both admins and clubs. Admins are quitting in record numbers. Those of us left are looking after more clubs than we can. New admins are impossible to find as most club members are aware this is happening and who wants to get muted. Activity levels are down. The site is killing competitive clubs.
And leagues. When league directors get muted no one can do much in whatever league their content disappears in. Most league directors are active admins.

After being muted several times, with no sympathy for my pleas, I simply gave up the process of creating club tournaments for the club members. Chess.com choked the process so I went with the administrative flow. I didn't need the headaches of trying to get unmuted. I moved on.

So many admins are quitting. And it is understandable.

Kookaburrra

Maybe the site could at least give us someone to contact for priority unmuting. Which would at least acknowledge that we have some importance and haven’t done anything wrong.

Fantasto

Maybe, although why should it be necessary? We/re not schoolchildren who first need to have our knuckles rapped before being allowed to return to our seats. Admins are the lifeblood of chess.com, yet we're being treated as erring criminals for daring to message club members about club events.

Kookaburrra

I agree. Fantasto. It’s nice to hear some sense on this subject.

I think it helps to keep in mind that people who create clubs and manage them are putting forth that effort for free. The only compensation is the satisfaction you get from doing it. So, it does seem counterproductive to punish Admins for trying to do something beneficial for members.

Creators of clubs and SAs who use effective methods are going to be more successful than those who don't care about their clubs or their members. I believe, one of the most important elements (which is rarely mentioned) is that members should be encouraged to quit any club in which they are not comfortable. If members pick and choose it allows for diversity and creativity in the types of clubs that are made available for members to join. This is why I generally disapprove of sending out vast quantities of invitations. I find I get better members when they want to join my club because they heard about it and want to be part of it.

I don't worry about pleasing people and being popular. I just try to do a good job.

Ximoon

I'm afraid chess.com doesn't really care. Good clubs isn't what brings them money. It's not visible from outside, far less than crazy bots and questionable partnerships.

Kookaburrra

We are customers. And pay memberships and provide events which help people stay and play. I don’t see why that isn’t important. I guess it is difficult to measure in $.

Bramblyspam

I had a different mute scenario.

One day, without notice, I found myself muted. With no reasons given. Not for messaging, as I never send the kinds of messages that have gotten admins muted. I was quite certain I hadn't done anything mute-worthy.

All my forum posts in my clubs were gone. I mainly handle vote chess games for my clubs, and all my comments in my vote chess games were also gone. I could still vote for moves, but couldn't share any analysis or message anybody. I'm a key player on my teams, so this had the clear potential to ruin our games in multiple vote chess leagues.

I opened a support ticket. Turns out there was a reason for the muting: I was a titled player and didn't have my real name displayed on my account. Without any notice, chesscom had changed a policy, and was now automatically muting anonymous titled players' accounts, without even telling them why.

Fortunately this got taken care of without any games getting ruined, but the whole episode was disconcerting to say the least. meh
