Mystery plot obvious solutions.

Dumbest mystery I ever see ( over and over again), the party is hired by a masked woman, to determine why all the people in the kings court are being turned to stone?

I don't get the licorice hate personally xD I'm not sure, I'd probably get my investigating cap on and look for clues. Being a kingdom of lollies and chocolate (I'm an aussie), I'd be looking for identifying features of certain citizens to narrow it down.
I started wondering about the obvious solutions to a mystery given the context. I want to see if I'm right about what most players would think. For instance if a large number of people where dying having had their bloods sucked out in a village and the only evidence was two bite marks. Then the rich man in a huge mansion on the top of the hill would be the prime suspect probably being a vampire. That's one where the trope is obvious. I want to pose scenarios and see if you have the same thought process I would.
My first example would be in a kingdom of candy. Where everybody is a different pudding (mainly candy, but also for example chocolate). "Civilians" (candies, chocolates...) start disappearing and being killed. It's obvious one kind of sweet food is attacking and killing the others (ie: dark chocolate, or gobstoppers for example). With no more information who would you suspect? Please think about the idea a little bit the read the continuation.
I would suspect liquorice because they are the most naturally evil sweet food. Did you think the same? If not now that you know liquorice are present (their existence in the world for the players is known) would you have picked them?
That's just an example of thought experiments, will post more when I think of them.
