Navbar Changes

Hey all,

You may have noticed that we made some changes to the site’s navigation last week. Thanks for the feedback so far, and feel free to add to this thread if there’s more you’d like to share.

Why make these changes?
We noticed that both old and new players have a hard time navigating Chess.com, and wanted to make it easier to find our core features. We looked at the most commonly used features and how most users players to them to inform our decisions.

This resulted in:

-Removing nav items with duplicate paths, e.g.

    • The 'New Game' button (play goes to the same place)

    • 'Themes' and 'Settings' from the home menu

-Moving less-used features to the 'More' menu to reduce noise and clutter around our more used features, e.g.

    • Solo Chess

    • Vision

    • Library

    • Explorer

-Renaming the top level nav items, and adding a new one:

    • Consolidating the Chess.com logo with the home menu

    • Changing 'Today' to 'News'

    • Adding the 'Watch' menu

    • Changing 'Connect' to 'Social'

-Adding landing pages to provide better indexes of which features are within a section

    • Learn

    • Social

    • More

It’s not fun to have things moved around on you, so we thank you for your patience as we work to get this right. We do hope that this will be a more optimal layout in the long term for our players.

Please also note that we've added features to our site-wide search, so if you're having trouble finding something you can search for it.

Pro-tip: use command+k on Mac, or ctrl+k on Windows to highlight the Chess.com search bar.

Cheers,

Leo

Great explanation and great improvement!

I like the new landing pages, might make it simpler for people and the new organization is nice. The only thing I'd suggest is bringing back the Home icon here's why:

Home is more universal for "these are your main menu options and/or notifications" and the chess logo could be a little confusing. I like how the 2 were combined, but I think just changing the logo to the home icon would look nicer. Plus, there's already a pawn used for Play making the 2 pawns look a little weird.

What's interesting is that the mobile optimized site has the home icon, just not the full browser version. So one of them is probably a bug.

@Martin_Stahl I like that better honestly... I did notice that the other day but totally forgot about it.
